Trip to Phoenix
Posted by campfire on February 15, 2022 at 7:37 pmAny suggestions on how to continue w/ practice when I will be in Phoenix? (Live in Knoxville, TN). I’ll be there 8 days. I have a guitar case, but since it is cloth, it won’t go with me on the plane.
Thanks!

Campfire, there are a few options for continuing to practice when it is not practical to take your guitar with you. You can see if a local music shop has rentals for the time you’re in Phoenix. Another option is to study some music theory during your trip. That is still considered practicing and you can take credit for the minimum 10 minutes per day. You can still watch the videos. Even though you can’t participate by playing, you would still be doing something related to guitar playing. You might want to find other TAC members that live in the Phoenix metro area and meet up with them for some jamming. Many member’s would be happy to let you use one of their guitars.
Have fun on your trip, and your guitar will be happy when you’re able to pick it up again on your return.

Another thought is to purchase an inexpensive travel guitar. There are some that are extremely compact and very reasonably priced.

It sounds like what you have is a “gig bag” and not a case. Definitely NOT plane worthy. Either get a hard case and take it on board or, as suggested, you can rent a guitar while you’re in Phoenix. Try doing a yelp search on rental guitars or instrument rentals and use the zip code where you’ll be staying. There’s a few stores in that area that do rentals so you should be fine. Good luck and safe travels @campfire.

These are great suggestions!!! Thanks! As always, you all are wonderful!!!

@campfire good question. I used a Martin Backpacker when I traveled to Phoenix last year. It has a soft case but I carried it onto an airplane like a purse. I have a trip to France and Spain coming up in May and I am questioning how I will manage that and whether I should take the backpacker with me or just follow along with the lessons and keep my streak going. I’ll need an international plan to have an internet connection. One can do a little theory as suggested or also work on lyrics. Lyrics always require a little time too.

So your question is how do I practice “By the Time I get to Phoenix”? 🙂

On my way to Allegro Music on Bell Rd in Phoenix. $30/month. I called another place and it was $75/day for a Taylor. So my sister and I are going to Allegro Music to get the $30 one, good enough for a week.
Good one!!! LOL

Bravo for using the community, @campfire as that is the way to get the most benefit from TAC.
But I love that you updated us on how things went for you. What a great solution. I hope that you can have lots of fun with your sister and with your guitar playing.

The airlines have gotten a little crazy and you don’t want to get there with guitar in hand and they say no. I think Loraine came up with a great suggestion of renting from a guitar store. Start calling now to set something up. I use Guitar-Center a lot and they are all over. Hey, and don’t be afraid of renting a smaller guitar. I use a 1/2 size Classical and I love it. I was using a, 1/4 size for awhile. But, works in a pinch. Good luck and have a fun vacation.

Thanks for asking this question. I’m leaving for Phoenix in 2 days.

I’ll be flying back to Knoxville, TN, tomorrow so I’m returning the guitar ($30/month) today. I have practiced every day but one! I have kept up w/ challenges and picked some chords to my sister. I like to do the picking roll on chords. Sounds pretty.
The guitar worked very well. It was so convenient!. (I called another place and they had a Taylor for $75. I asked if that was for a month, and he said a day. LOL. Needless to say too much.)
So I sure do recommend renting a guitar. Great experience and I didn’t lose the guitar skills I have!
Again, thanks to all!!!

So glad you had a great guitar rental experience, @campfire!! Travel rentals are also my preferred way to go while on vacation. By the time you pay for gate checking and/or damage anxiety, it’s very well worth it!!
$75/day is really kind of steep, even for a Taylor. But $30/month is wild on the other end of the scale!! I’m curious to know what guitar they are renting for that rate…
I would be tempted to just go to the Guitar Center every day and grab a Taylor to “try it out” for an hour a day…. Free guitar rental, hahaha!!
Anywayz, glad everything worked out well for you in your travels!!

This is great @campfire
You have updated us twice on this thread. I really appreciate that. What a valuable thread this has become. Thank you for asking and thank you for sharing what you learned and thank you for sharing your experience.

Thanks Carol and Mike!
I didn’t recognize the name of the guitar. It wasn’t a Taylor, Gibson, Martin or Fender. There was a label inside of it. Yamaha?? Not sure. The tag said $299, on sale. The hi E string was bent at the 6th fret so all notes above that sounded the same. But for $30, it was great. The sales person gave me a strap as well as 2 picks. (Allegro Music, 3510 E Bell Rd, Phoenix, AZ.) He was very nice. Rental is the way to go.
We left Phoenix Thursday, 9:30 AM, Phoenix time, arrived in San Antonio, TX, to change planes, then Nashville, TN and finally, drove home, Knoxville, Friday, 12:45 AM, Knox time. Soooo very glad I didn’t have a guitar w/ me.
So now, I’m NOT behind in the challenges and even played for my sister. Sweet moments.
It was the way to go… Thanks to all for your wonderful ideas!!
