I’m on day two and I’m looking for advice regarding conditioning my finger tips. Is it better to practice shorter time periods more often, or just keep plugging away for longer times? Any insight would be appreciated.

    Hi MedicScott,

I went back to a classical guitar (found it at a thrift store) with nylon strings when I restarted my guitar journey. Playing often for a few minutes at a time. I found it a painfully slow process! I’m now up to playing maybe 1 to 2 hours a day on a Folk guitar and my finger tips are getting tougher. I still enjoy the classical guitar! It gets played around 1/3 of the time especially when starting out on the daily challenge.

    Good luck!

    Happy Strumming!

I’m on day 12: still in the ouch-phase. I feel the skin getting thicker but not there quite yet. Shorter time periods are definitely better than longer while your fingertips are tender, but even then, don’t overdo it. When your fingertips tell you to stop, stop. Try again later. If you get blisters, you’ll have to stop for a few days to let them heal, and that is really, really annoying.

Stick with it medic, I guess the proper advice would be little and often but i wouldn’t listen to that even tho that’s what I’d advise. I’m about 6 months in at one point I wore permanent grooves into my fingers from over squeezing which wasn’t good then I filed them down too much which was a big mistake which I guess you’d know going by your name, now I’m through the other side I can play for hours and finger soreness not be the limiting factor. I have a softer touch now as well also I found at one point a lot of the earlier and beginner lessons revolve around the same chords held for longer times so if you can mix it up that will help. And the best advice is patience just keep with it and you will improve and adapt ( patience is a virtue I don’t have but learning)

Well thank you! That makes sense. I know that the first couple of months can be tough. One thing that I may try doing is not pushing so tightly on the strings. After reading you post I realized I’m really baring down on the strings. Maybe I’m over doing it. I just need to “lighten up” a bit…..

Short and multiple practices throughout a day work best for me.
