Zoom Audio Problem
Posted by DanJG on March 26, 2021 at 2:50 pmI had to cancel my online Zoom guitar lesson today because of an audio problem that came out of the blue! For some reason I was getting an echo through my microphone! My teacher’s voice didn’t echo, only mine.
Zoom is running on my Windows 10 laptop and my microphone (AKG P120?) is plugged into a Scarlett 2i2 interface. My headphones are also plugged into the interface.
This setup has successfully been used before, several times with my guitar instructor and also at a VOM.
Ideas?

Yes, Dan, I can help. But I might need more information. If your set up has been working, it’s probably a Zoom setting that has changed. Start by checking your Zoom settings. When Original Sound is turned on, it used to stop the echo cancellation. But the newer version of Zoom you can turn on Original Sound and still have echo cancellation, but you need to make sure the little box is checked.
If you can’t figure it out, maybe someone can help you on one of the VOMs. I will be hosting this Sunday at 12 noon Mountain Time. (2 pm Eastern Time). I can help you if you can’t get it fixed before then. 😄

Thanks @Mike-Gaurnier Mike-Gaurnier . I believe the echo cancellation box was checked when I was looking through the settings but will look again once I return home. I would hate to take up VOM time for a Zoom problem. Would it be be possible to set up a separate time?

Yes, what’s your schedule look like? I will be Zooming starting at 7:30 pm EST. And then again tomorrow starting at 2 pm EST.

Mike, I just rescheduled my guitar lesson and my instructor wants to test things out tomorrow morning. If that goes well, I won’t have to bother you! Otherwise, I’ll try to touch base with you at 2:00.
By the way, I updated Zoom this morning and ran the test meeting. All appears to be well, but I will know for sure tomorrow.
Thanks again for your help!

Without knowing all the parameters I would guess it was your instructors setup causing the echo.
Questions that need to be asked.
Did the echo go away if your Instructor was muted?
Who heard the Echo – Just you or Both?
One way to look at it is you, speak and it goes out zoom If another open mic hears your voice it will transmit it down zoom again. If your open mic hears it twice it will transmit it again.

interesting point about my instructor’s setup, though I will say that we have had several lessons together with no problems. I was the only one hearing the echo but we never thought of muting her microphone. We’ll be testing again tomorrow and I will keep that in mind.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks @branman for stepping in. I thought it might be the instructors equipment, but I wasn’t sure, so I didn’t want to say anything about that. But your explanation makes perfect sense. 😃

No problem @Dan J G. Hey, one thing, your name still isn’t working. They seem to have fixed that. If you went to your profile and took out the spaces, it would work. So Dan-J-G would be accepted by the system. And supposedly, Dan.J.G would be accepted. So you might try that as it’s easier to type. The periods weren’t working before, but they might be now. 😄
Also, I am going to remember what @branman explained above. I had figured it out before, but didn’t remember. His explanation was so simple that it helps me visualize it so I can remember without some big brain effort. 🤨
