Getting this sunk into muscle and memory.
That D,D,U pattern gave me fits for a while, but I finally got it to feeling pretty good. I see we will be reverting to D,U,D,U in Section 4 and later, so I guess we had best do as Dave and Tony suggest an get comfortable with both!
it seemed Tony that I heard an tiny emphasis on the end of each arpeggio which gave it the “rag” feel..when I did that it was easier to get it.
Tony and Eli,
Take a look at medium speed. Need to edit it.
Thanks for the heads up 🙂
Tony – the down up down up picking pattern has become well burned into my brain and muscle memory. This song is down down up and it seems unnatural (well of course it does). Am at a cross roads as to which picking pattern I should use. Is one way “more right” and for good reasons than the other?
Dave,
This is a great question, I am glad you asked. First, there is no way that is more right… if you wish to stick with alternating pick strokes that will work just as well as the D,D,U pattern. The reason this one likely feels weird is that the pattern goes across two measures (keeping sets of three throughout). I hope that helps/makes sense 🙂
Cheers,
Tony
Well after this week, the D,D,U feels much better. I think that the real mantra should be – if you want to be a respectable player/picker you should be be able to do pick lots of different ways. Patience and practice old grasshopper Dave.
Dave,
Glad you dug the week and that the DDU feels better. It is true being able to pick many different ways is an asset all pickers strive for 🙂
Cheers,
Tony
Like Dave H (the original) this song is finally giving me a better feel for the D,D,U cross-picking pattern. That up stroke at the end is what gives the emphasis at the end that Virginia W was speaking about. Definitely a light bulb moment for me!
