No problem holding this one down. My hand is twisted into an unmovable clamp.
-
I do not like this chord. I feel a lot of discomfort in my whole hand. Def doing stretches for this one.
-
Good exercise, really shows you what you need to work on.
-
I understand what Throwback 1961 is saying about arthritis and age. I had Sweetwater lower my strings as much as possible, and it has helped a lot.
-
I’ve been using bar chords for some time and wish there were another way.
-
this showed me that I need to work on this bar chord that I needed to build strength in my index finger to bar the B and Hi E string , I have also tried the technique on other Bar chords and see that I need to build this strength in my index finger for all my bar chords t be clear. I see why the power chords are more friendly, ha

good on this one to
-
I can get the barre chord, however the low E doesn’t sound as clear as I would approve, however let’s keep practicing.
-
I don’t know guys. I’m thinking my fret hand just isn’t able to hold that barre chord. Maybe age and arthritis isn’t allowing for that kind of stretch and index finger pressure. Lots of negative apostrophe ‘t words in this comment I know. I’ll keep plugging away and stretching.
-
Got the finger part but the sound is a lot to be desire. Needs help but will keep cracking it.
-
I did it. But my A string and my b string suck. So… work to be done. But I did do it. My actual struggle with this chord is getting into it and out of it from other chords. I usually opt for the easy f instead.
-
I’ve noticed my pinky and ring finger are turning red from me pressing so hard. Yours looks nice and relaxed.
-
So far the only way I can get a decent sounding F chord is to crank the headstock up next to my ear so it looks like I’m trying to play the cello! I’m gonna take this as a small win, but I’m sure glad nobody is watching!!
-
I passed, good exercise Tony!
-
This is coming along, but then so is winter. The B is my nemesis right now as well as not to clear notes.
-
I am a little better at getting the G sounding better; I don’t seem to have the strength in that finger to make a solid connection.
-
Having difficulty with clean sound on the low E and G. Don’t seem to have enough strength in the barre finger to make good contact.
-
5 outta 6 strings are ringing true.
-
Lemme guess: B?
;p
-
-
Doable.
I’ve been messing with the F chord for a year and a half. Never with this structured practice. I’m wondering how much time to devote? -
Iām doing better now on this
-
Although the barr cord was hard, this practice went better.
-
When I started playing this, before I took this lesson, I used my pinkie instead of my ring finger for the A shape. For some reason thatās easier for me. I wonder if there is a down side to doing that way?
-
This is definitely making my barre chords stronger. Hopefully faster will follow.
-
Started this in August worked on it every day I thought of it. Sounded real bad in August But now I can play it clear most of the time. I think this is a win. Thanks Tony
-
You just gotta dig in.
-
Wow! I’ve been practicing the E shape Barre for a little while each day and it’s paying off. I’m now getting clear notes most of the time. In the beginning, clarity seemed out of reach with these Barred chords. So happy to make progress. Yay!
Tony, thanks for your helpful Barre Chord series!

Tough on the fretting hand
-
Wow… for some reason this is tough on my wrist…going to have to practice, practice, practice!!
-
Same, after a few minutes I feel like my whist is falling in pieces…
-
*Wrist
-
-
-
Five minutes an my fretting hand is toast
-
No way!
-
This one’s definitely a left hand exercise. Good workout
-
Day 4 and these @#$& barre cords are still horrible!!
-
The trick for me learning barf, ahem, I mean barre chords was to play the G barre chord. I found the G to be easier because it was further from the nut and did not have to press down as hard. Once I got it down, I did move up to the F barre chord.
-
getting there but dont now why my arm hurts?
-
That B string. so difficult to hold down.
-
Got to 2x normal speed, but had to look at my picking hand for the double picking. Will need to practice this more so it becomes second nature. 10,000 reps…
-
The previous barre chord lessons lessons were very helpful & ..,today I was checking some of my fav tabs & saw āUrge for Goingā by Tom Rush & there they were F & A (B) barre chords – so now I can practice & play along with Tom, whose ā Rockport Sundayā track is still technically one of the best . So I am very happy
-
I LOVE Urge for Going. You should check out Tony Rice’s version too. It is just gorgeous….definitely my favorite
