Tony, I notice in all your playing that you seem to touch your strings with your left hand pretty lightly and still get perfect notes. I have a Gibson J 45 and I really have to press hard to get a good note, which leads to really sore finger tips, especially if I haven’t been playing for a while. Is this because the action is set low on your guitars, and the J 45 has a naturally high action? I don’t want to go mess with the guitar if that’s how it’s supposed to be set. I’m just wondering if it’s just my guitar or if that’s how the model is supposed to be.
Ryan,
I am glad you asked this question, I generally prefer my guitars setup on the more higher side of low. I know this seems odd, but I really like the ease of play, and also the ability to dig in when necessary and not get any buzzes. It sounds like your guitar may need a bit of a setup (nothing out of the ordinary). In the setup the neck relief, saddle height, and nut will be addressed so that the guitar will play easier. I hope this all makes sense. I would take it in to your local shop and see if they can perform a setup for you, it will really make your guitar play smoother.
Cheers,
Tony
cheers man Tony, also do you use light strings?
Ryan,
Great question, on my larger body guitars I use Elixir Mediums and my small bodied guitars are strung with Martin SP Lifespan Lights. I walways experiment with brands but the gauges stay pretty true to mediums on dreads and lights on everything else 🙂
Cheers,
Tony
