Cool @Mrfredsporty ! Thanks for sharing. The elusive Fretboard Wizard course has a great way to figure the key of a song as well. Hope they get it back up and going soon! 😃

Great win @1Dean ! I have been focusing on flat picking since joining TAC and the Flat Picking Skills course was one in which I focused first (in addition to the dc’s). I was struggling being able to play along with the backing tracks (I also became totally lost). What I ended up doing is starting out setting my own metronome at about 60 (sometimes 40!) and picking my way through the tabs with eighth notes turned into quarter notes and played it until I had it down. Then I would bump up the BPMs by 5 or 10 and did he whole thing again. Repaww we ares that until I could play them at 120 to 170 BPMs. This accomplished a couple things: it pretty much cemented the tab in my brain and got me to a speed at which I could play with a backing track at the slowest speed (the backing track is at 80 BPM say so I am plying the lead at 160 to accommodate playing the 8th notes).

Then listened to some of the professional bluegrass bands play these and learned I would need to get my speed up to 240! 😱.

Recently I found this cross picking lesson by Molly Tuttle and found it interesting and helpful. Keep picking! 🤘🎶🎸😎

Hi @elisabethajgmail-com , although I am a bit on the taller side, guitar posture is one of the things I’ve been working on over the past few months. From what I have read and tried there are a couple things t that Imhabe adopted:

    – sit with a straight back imagining a floating balloon is gently lifting an elongating your neck and spine

    – relax the shoulders, elbows and wrists

    – keep your shoulders parallel with one another (ie. avoid having one sloped down lower than the other)

    – Keep the guitar body parallel with your body ((eg. avlid kicking the bottom out and playing on a slant)

I began taking a video of myself playing so I could see what I was doing. Then each time I would play I would select one thing to work on (for example literally saying “I am working on relaxing my shoulders and keeping them parallel”). I would play for a while and then restate the goal. Rinse repeat. Then another time I would work on relaxing elbows and wrists. Etc. then I would video myself again and re-assess.

The other thing I stumbled into was pushing the neck of the guitar forward just a bit. This changed the place where my right arm was wrapping around the lower guitar body bout. It really released some of the strain I was feeling in my shoulders and elbow). It also allowed me to extend my fretting arm a bit more. Took some pressure off that elbow.

Final thought – I have seen some shorter statured folks actually stand to play their dreadnoughts using a strap. Don’t know how feasible this is.

Best of luck to you figuring this out! 😀

Hey @Salty , another great “guitar” movie is “A Black and White Night”, where Roy Orbison is joined by a cast of those he has influenced over the years to play his songs. What a great movie. Album is also really fantastic.

Congrats on getting set up @GerryB56 ! This is a great win in and of itself! Although some will be “cringe” worthy as you mention you will learn a lot. Once I started recording myself I also found I began watching other’s recordings with a different eye (eg. “ahhhh, so that is how they are doing that!).

Have fun and looking forward to seeing your post some of your videos! 😃

Great win @Philb ! The “guitar time machine” will take us there! It is a great feeling (both nostalgic and a confidence booster) when we realize – “hey, I think I can ply that”! 🤔🤔🤔😀

Hey @Philb I also went out and did some poking around by what your meant by “Tonewood Amp”. Pretty cool device. A great cross between allowing the guitar to breath and vibrate and then modifying the tones via the onboard electronics w/ the Tonewood. Thanks for mentioning that in your post! 😀 😎👍

I totally get it @gerryb56. For what it is worth, since joining TAC in May of 2022 and playing on a daily basis the guitar is beginning to feel like more of an extension of my musical self vs. something that seems so awkward and in the way. Still have a long, long way to go – but it is getting better.

Finally, I concluded some years back that most every guitarist (hobbyist level at least) has the same imposter syndrome. When someone asks if we play we usually say something like “well yes but I am not really very good”. 🙂. Tony P often encourages us to stop comparing ourselves to others and our own self expectations of what we should be… and instead enjoy the process of learning!

Play on my friend and have fun 🤘🎸🎶 🎥 😃

Thanks very much for taking your time to listen and comment @Philb ! I truly appreciate it. A thoughtful place is where the song transports me – it is nice to know it also transports you a bit. 😃
