I learned all the notes on the fretboard by using them like counting sheep to relax and go [back] to sleep.

I started at the head stock from 6th to 1st string. At first I recalled only major scale frets (2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 12th). Later after those were comfortable I added those in between.

Then later I began to mentally do all 7 notes singly all over the fretboard (starting with a root (say A, then the 3rd, C, then the 5th, E). Then use the fifth, E to act as the new root… then 3rd, G… then 5th, B. Etc. Etc. I not only learned the notes that way but the chordal relationships and the Nashville numbering system. I never did it as a learning session or with the guitar. I just did it mentally as a prelude to rest or when I was doing a repetitive task like weeding. In about a month or two I had the fretboard memorized and never felt like it was real work.

Kudos to you for sharing your tuner learning tool idea.

When I started TAC, I don’t think I had one flat picking song in my playlist. But just to have fun I went to the TAC vault and found one. It was fun. I found two. I added a crosspicking tune.

But I continued to also fingerpick. You aren’t resource constrained and it isn’t a competition.

So I do whatever comes up. I give it a try. Old Robert Johnson and Blues stuff. Tried it and it is fun too even though I am sorry at it. So my advice is to try whatever comes up. It’s only 10 minutes. To repeat…You are not resource constrained (and haven’t missed a meal unless on purpose). The saying is “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly at first”.

Ain’t it fun to have something you enjoy? Congratulations on the big 5-0-0.

Somewhere in the Acoustic Tuesday Archives I seem to recall Tony did a show on this topic or one very close to this topic. I watched a few back then. You might check it out.

It may have been an instrumental but I was singing along! Thanks.

Good job. A habit I myself appreciate.

I used these three books during my extended vacation this summer and they have been helpful. I’m on #3 now.

  • I printed it out and played it. Aren’t you just the cat’s meow? … Connecting the dots and all. And it’s movable since it’s all closed position!

My effective goal has been to build and add to a bucket of memorized back pocket songs that can be played impromptu. After I had about 5 songs of different genres (crying song, folk song, train song, love song [can also be crying song🎭], rock), then I challenged myself to add songs of people who aren’t dead! I also have a couple of flat picking songs. Just ideas!

Tony said in the Quarterly Workshop 7/6/22 that FBW 2.0 has now completed shooting and is in editing. FYI.

I love FBW too. Completed lots of loose connections for me.

This thread has a lot of great comments and food for thought. I think a missing piece is theory. I dabbled around for decades learning new songs and techniques specific to the “interesting” parts of those songs and had fun. But each time I became inconsistent I lost the Song. As I’ve aged and my voice range narrowed, I lost the Song because it was not in a key or range I could now sing. Then I discovered, through TAC, Theory and how it relates to Technique and finally to the Song. Now the songs are easier to learn and make sense, so less memory is required, and the technique fits into whole plan. The song construct and writing songs opened up. (Of course another big part of the equation is that consistent playing and exercises give the strength and flexibility to perform the technique.). So I think the Song is definitely a part of one’s guitar life. It is the application. And the Song leads to the social aspect of a Guitar Experience.

I call those “Anthem” songs. They aren’t necessarily my favorites but like you said some everyone knows. Songs like Sweet Caroline, Margaritaville, etc.
