You won’t be able to get to it if it was from December unless you favorited it. All of the challenges for the current month can be accessed by clicking on Tony’s Acoustic Challenge icon and selecting from the list on the left as long as it’s not a future date.

MemberJanuary 14, 2022 at 2:40 pm in reply to: Playing songs by heart months/years after learning themThere are some good suggestions here but I don’t think it’s realistic to expect to learn songs and not have to refresh them periodically. Our memories, even the muscle kind, simply aren’t that good. I’ve heard many interviews with professionals where they indicate that even though they may have played a song thousands of times, they too forget over time. I’m not sure what your motivation is in the first place. If you’re not planning to play for anyone, what’s the point? If you are, then simply review them ahead of time. If it’s just for bragging rights and saying “I know X number of songs by heart”, that’s just ego not musicianship.

Congrats Don!
That’s a whole lot more than a small win. Two+ years of consistency is no joke! Good work.

Tons of great advice from others so I won’t repeat them. What I will do is let you know that I’ve played guitar for well over 40 years and I don’t get through all of the challenges. Some are pretty easy and others are quite difficult even with a ton of experience.
What I will tell you is that it’s important to warm up properly before doing these challenges. Play one of the warm up exercises from week 1 or something else that you’re very familiar with for the first 5 minutes and then give the challenge a try. I’ll bet you see improvement just doing that!
As someone who has broken both wrists and has had to relearn everything, trust me on this. Do this every day and you will see improvement.

Sorry, I don’t have any experience with the Taylor 562ce, but I do have quite a bit of experience with 12 strings. If I were to get another 12 string it would be an Ovation. The bodies are smaller, like OM size and they have great necks and electronics in them. I’ve had 2 (Ultra and Custom Legend) and they were both excellent. If you could get an Adamas (made by Ovation) that would be even better. I had a Melissa Etheridge 6 string Adamas at one time and it was surprisingly nice. You should be able to find an Ovation 12 string in a store locally to try out. I don’t think you would be disappointed.

Congrats! It’s exciting when you’ve been working at something and it finally falls into place. Keep up the good work!

Hi JoAnn,
So sorry for your loss. It’s understandable that you don’t feel like picking up the guitar right now. I’m pretty sure playing guitar is not one of the stages of grief. For me, I wrote songs that I sang for both my mother and father’s funerals. It was a great way for me to channel what I was feeling. Though it has been over 20-30 years, I can still play both songs even though it was a one time event. Maybe you can find a way to honor him in a similar way. I know it meant a lot to me to even be able to do it in such a short span of time, and it meant a lot to my family. If it’s not possible, just take your time and allow yourself to grieve at whatever pace you need to. We’ll be here when you’re ready to resume.

Well, I wanted to update you on my progress. I made it all the way through a couple of times today, but just barely. I can comfortably get through sections 1-4. Nowhere near as clean and smooth as it needs to be, but making what I consider HUGE progress compare to a few days ago. I’m pretty confident I’ll make my goal.

Yep, that’s how it works! Congrats on making it through. Some things take longer than others, but if you break them down into smaller bits (i.e. the spots where you’re have trouble) you can do it pretty quickly.

Congrats stevieblues!
Keep up the good work, it’s worth it.

Actually, the Friday lessons where Tony goes over the chords in a given key are a great place to start. For each key there are 3 Major chords (the 1-4-5) and 3 Minor Chords ( the 2-3-6) plus 1 dominant chord which Tony typically substitutes another chord for because, let’s face it, almost no one uses dominant chords in popular music. So, for every key, you have 7 chords that you can use in any song, in any order. This of course is the quick and dirty version, but just knowing this would have saved me a lot of trial and error when I was first learning.
I’m not sure where you are in your learning journey, so let me know if you need more of an explanation and I will be happy to break it down for you.

Still working on getting out there myself. Only need one more tune under the fingers and I should be ready.

The lessons in the skills section will appeal to you if you are interested in blues and finger and flat picking.
I’ve played for a long time, but I am taking lessons here because I like the challenges and filling in the gaps in my guitar education.

Yeah, that’s probably correct. Could be an 18, but not likely.

CORRECTION: I learned from another thread that if you favorite a video, the tab does save. For some reason there just isn’t an icon for it. I just tested this for myself and it is true. If you move your cursor to the right of the heart, your cursor will turn into a hand (at least that’s what mind does) and then you can click and the tab will open up.
