  • Song Writing Classes

    Hi Guys,

New TACer here–just finished my first month! Enjoying the daily challenges, but I’m really interested in putting all these building blocks together to write my own songs. I’ve looked through some of the additional classes, but from what I can see, it doesn’t look like there’s anything that actually deals with the songwriting process. Just thought I would reach out and see if any of you know of classes where Tony gets into this. I really like Tony’s “bite size” style and delivery, so it would be awesome if he had any. If not, are any of you familiar with something similar out there?

    Hey Dan,

The Fretboard Wizard teaches you some ways to put notes together and at the end of the course Tony shares something to help you write a song.

There are a lot of options for songwriting courses. Try searching youtube for songwriting.

Next time fretboard wizard enrollment comes around its worth trying. Despite the name its mostly about theory of how to construct chords and how to know which ones sound good together.

Actually, the Friday lessons where Tony goes over the chords in a given key are a great place to start. For each key there are 3 Major chords (the 1-4-5) and 3 Minor Chords ( the 2-3-6) plus 1 dominant chord which Tony typically substitutes another chord for because, let’s face it, almost no one uses dominant chords in popular music. So, for every key, you have 7 chords that you can use in any song, in any order. This of course is the quick and dirty version, but just knowing this would have saved me a lot of trial and error when I was first learning.

I’m not sure where you are in your learning journey, so let me know if you need more of an explanation and I will be happy to break it down for you.

Hi @DanCarpenter , So the final assignment of Fretboard Wizard is that you have to write a song and perform it on the Forums. From knowledge of previous lessons in the course, combined with the lessons in the final segment, Tony shows a formula for the most common ways to figure out a melody, figure out a chord progression and put them together to make a song – but you have to come up with the lyrics😱

That’s what you’ll find here, the tools, to do your own thing👍
