looks like you gave your Tension Manager a raise and seems like that was a productive decision. It is all about the tension, or making it all go away. Mind and fingers. Nice win @MikeGaurnier

Nice Win there @Cadgirl , it was so hard or rather I should say “so challenging” for me to play with the metronome at first but it really was a game changer for my progress. Now, not challenging at all in fact it is a great comfort and a tool that helps me move from where I am to where I want to go.

Welcome to TAC @Kafka , I am all about “words have meaning”. You can be the guy with the guitar collection (for good reason) and we will go about with our Guitarsenals. I will break the word down maybe it will be helpful maybe not.

Guitars- (meaning stringed instruments) Enals- greek word for meaning things that are collected. Soooo, there ya gwoh. This word should not be confused with arsenal as that word breaks down like this: Ars, meaning Butt and Enals, same as above so Arsenal is a collection of Butts.🤣

Glad you are here and I wish you fast progress toward your goals.

Did you see the Acoustic Tuesday Show for this week? Tony showed a great example of how to integrate the Tuesday Lick into a basic strum progression. Acoustic Tuesday is the fourth Icon choice in the left Margin Bar. I like the example because he does it at a reasonable speed, (I still have to slow it down to play along). It gives me the sense of how it works.

Hi @NSmith Welcome to TAC. Loraine mentioned stretching and I have to iterate that point. There is another type of stretch to consider and it involves flexion and stretch simultaneously. It took me a long time to develop the muscles to be able to do it so be patient and persistent if you can’t do it now. Try touching the pads (the soft palm side parts) of your first (the distal phalages) finger sections to the bottom pad (the proximal phalanges) so that your finger do not touch the pads of your hand. I still have a hard time doing this with my pinky but getting better all the time…measured in microns. Also, You may have to position your thumb on the neck of the guitar below the center line of the neck on the back of the neck to give yourself the finger reach you need to get to the lowest bass stings easily (E and A string). One last thing. Try and find a player on youtube that has similar hand size and body type as you do and see how they adjust to compensate for the finger size. I have the problem of big fat sausage fingers and I found a guy with similar fingers and build (Paul Huemiller) and it was helpful for me to watch him play and see how he deals with it. No guarantees but you may glean a little insight that may help you. No one comes to mind immediately but someone else may know and throw out a name: one of the beauties of the TAC forum. Let us know how it goes.

Yes is relate strongly @GuitarGeni , I have what I would say is average (not great but not horrible) natural talent. What I got instead of “gifted” talent was tons of determination. The outside world does not differential between the two. I think musicians themselves can see and do talk about the the differences. When I ever get mistaken for having a musical gift I just smile and say thanks, it is usually non musical people who say it. I am okay with that, it validates my determination but they don’t need to know.

Cool gizmo there @Guitargeezer-Jack . I think I need to have it wired into my brain. Maybe that would get my rhythm on track, glad you clarified though with lower pant leg or sock😉

  • Try watching your hand in a mirror to check how your fingers are aligned. I was surprised the first time I did this. Or your computer works too if you have a camera on it. No need to record just watch your fingers.

Yep I have been known to stick my big ol’ schnoz deep into soundholes and sometimes at the guitar store, into ones I don’t even own just to experience that sweet perfume. If on the fence it can be a deciding factor. Happy NGD @GuitarGeni !!

Congrats @Freedom2ignite I am happy I did. The more I do this the more I realize this is a long haul journey. Here it stays fun. Peeps are cool. I never get bored. And to get better I don’t have to think about it, just do. It is like my personal trainer for guitar.

@gjhigh@embarqmail.com You got nothing. Looking at the picture, he owns you and he knows it. Maybe ask him what he wants to hear? You’re just lucky he doesn’t take over the empty guitar case while you are playing and not give that back either.

@MikeGaurnier pretty much laid out how I think about it. I will emphasize one thing: get started on the daily challenges. They are challenges not because we can do them on auto pilot after ten minutes but because we can use these exercises to grow our finger muscles and mind muscle connection on our way to intuitive playing. At first they will seem near impossible if you are just starting out. Take the time to make just a part of it work. Maybe only one note. Maybe two notes together. Maybe making just one chord, maybe two. It is the start and the start is the hardest part. Find the fun happiness and joy in the sound you make and do it again tomorrow. Remember, tomorrow it is just 10 minutes. If today you did 10, 20, or more great but tomorrow begins with 10 min. If your day is over and you have missed your preferred time to play, no worries, 10 minutes before bed is an OSM time to play. The key is play, just play.
