    Dear Ursula

I read through this whole thread and actually understood everything the guys referred to. 3 years ago I would not have had a clue. I am however very interested in how stuff works and why things are the way they are (bit of a nerd/geek)

I have studied theory initially out of pure curiosity. To be honest, it hasn’t help my technique one bit (for that you have to actually play your guitar) it has however given me a much better understanding of music and why what gets done when and where. But to get where I am now (not that I know everything 😆) took time, effort and patients.

So I do not have any words of wisdom or insight to add to what has been said about music theory already. What I do want to encourage you to do is to just keep on keeping on. Things will eventually fall in place. The FBW is a great starting point and you get enough info from it to have a good foundation to start you self study from.

So just keep on keeping on 😜

    And remember to have fun

  • Fully agreed!! FBW have opened up a world of new possibilities for me and simplified music theory (which was confusing and overwhelming) to a level which I feel I can apply to everyday music situations. Congrats 😁 and to may more musical discoveries

Thank you very much for the reply Bernie. So we have the minor working with its relative major. But then the minor also seem to work with its own major (eg. E minor pentatonic working oin the key of E major), right?

Let’s keep dissonance on the back burner for now as I am a firm believer of starting with the more simple stuff and then working my way to the more complex stuff later on.

Any other keys that the E minor pentatonic can work in?

I think what I am trying to fleece out for myself is if a song that is in the key of G major for example, I should then be able to use both the G minor & major pentatonic scale and also the E minor pentatonic scale to improv with?? And in the key of A major for example, I should be able to use both the A minor & major pentatonic scale and also the F# minor pentatonic??

Or am I over complicating things

    Thanks Cadgirl.

I want to get another guitar, just wanting to justify it 🤣

But yes don’t want to go though all of the effort and then its not worth it. I don’t mind the calloused finger tips, I just want something with a different sound. The nylon stringed acoustic (or classic then) seems to be the easiest way to achieve that.

    Appreciate your advice

    Hi Niv

That makes sense. I guess I can exchange the piece where the grooves are cut into, or just file it to be slightly larger. But it won’t just be a straight exchange. The current guitar I have, does have steel strings on so I guess the tension wouldn’t be an issue. But then going from nylon to steel sounds like a definite no go.

I also didn’t realise that there is a difference in width.

Thanks for the thorough answer and advise
