    Hi Loraine,

I’m new to TAC but recently watched a Quarterly Guitar Progress Party replay from earlier this year. In the video, a TAC member named SAM shared his experience with his essential tremors. He offered to share information and his story to anyone who is interested if they reach out to him directly (although I didn’t see his last name mentioned). He had a surgery that was really successful.

His story starts at 1:31:53 via the link below.

    Sam from Alabama

My Dad has essential tremors and I know that increases the likelihood that I will develop them as well later in life. I know he finds relief with rest and stress reduction – his shakiness increases when he is exhausted or has been doing a lot of labor on the farm.

I hope you are able to get some relief and find a solution that keeps you playing!

I’m new to TAC and guitar playing so I can’t weigh in directly – however, if the question of whether you are stretching yourself too thin pops into your mind, you likely are. In other hobbies I tend to look for language I use around the hobby (I do a lot of woodworking) if I catch myself saying I “have to” in reference to my hobby rather than “I get to” I know that I’m nearing burnout.

For me in woodworking – if I’m learning something new I practice only that skill for a brief amount of time really focusing on the specifics that day. For TAC that could be a song of the day. Do 10 min focused and repeat.

If I’m working on getting improvements out of an existing skill that is where I’ll give myself more time – 2 hrs of flow state. I know the skill, I just look for repetition and opportunities to grow the skill. For TAC that could be a day where you play the songs you know and look to find 1-2 things you like and want to improve.

That way you aren’t looking for 2hrs each day, but 10 min some days, 2 hrs when it’s available.

Avoiding burnout helps us keep hobbies from gathering dust I find.

    Cheers!

Thank you for sharing Fred. It is so wonderful to find connection and community in different places. I’m really new to TAC but have already benefited from the forum and have seen how engaged you are with the community.

Thank you for sharing this chart. I knew guitar proficiency took some time, but seeing these timeframes I might try to increase my daily practice time a bit!

That is really kind, thank you! It has been such a wonderful month of playing and I can’t wait to see where it takes me in time. I’m hopeful that I can get a few family members started as well. How cool is it to be able to pick up an instrument and make music.

I really appreciate your note. Changing stories that we tell ourselves can be difficult but so worth it! This community has been helpful at keeping a positive tone as well.

Thank you! I have a metronome app on my phone, I just wasn’t sure what speeds to try for the exercises. I can play around to see if I can figure out a good series of speeds to use. Cheers!

This is an excellent tip. Silly I didn’t think of it on my own, but much appreciated!

The quick draw is where I noticed it as well. I am trying to just simply count myself for the 3 second draw but I noticed that I started counting really slowly as I was trying to fret the strings 😅. I might just try a timer on my phone to replace the video loops that were removed.

Kit, thank you so very much for this thoughtful description of how you approached the FW. I think it would benefit me a lot by taking notes, making sketches, doing a little research to help reinforce what I’m learning. I am a slow learner in general but I do tend to hold onto information longer when I write it down. It’s great that you also review each missed quiz answer. I need to go back to the first FW quiz and video to apply this approach. I think it will help tremendously.

    Thank you!!!!
