Many people use the method you describe: Thumb on E,A,D index on G, middle on B, ring on high E. I think it is the best way to learn, but it is challenging. When I first started fingerpicking I used only thumb and index, later adding middle and finally using the ring as well. This is a great basis and covers most situations. Ultimately you may want to implement use of fingers on base strings as well. But, I definitely think you do well to focus on the thumb and three fingers to start.

That’s one of two ways I finger the A major chord :-). The first way I learned was using just my index and middle fingers. I DO have fat fingers.

So your question is how do I practice “By the Time I get to Phoenix”? 🙂

The reaction is not surprising since the format change has resulted in an exodus of many long-time, active members. It is understandable, I suppose, but unfortunate.

Super cool!

B and B flat chords are not that prevalent and there’s always a work around. Some fingers are not meant for them (including mine) 🙂

Please take it as the compliment it was intended to be. Most of us wish we were good enough for someone to call us gifted. Hopefully the thousands of hours have been a joyous journey resulting in such beautiful and seamless play that you make it look easy. 🙂

Yes, this is usually part of a luthier set up.
