Okay Wes… you’re an engineer, aren’t you? Just admit it. 😉

Yeah! Establishing the habit is what it’s all about. How many decades it took me to learn that simple fact… 🥲

Have to say, electric is better to start with. A good-quality low-cost electric and a cheap practice amp (for example, the incredible Spark) will set you back less than a mid-range acoustic. Even if you buy the guitar online, get it set up at a local shop. You need to do that no matter what you buy.

When you walk into the gym, do you start by bench-pressing 200lbs? Why not? After all, if you can do that, you can easily handle 70lbs (which is what I could do—maybe).

Don’t pile too much on at the beginning. Electric is just SIMPLY easier and doesn’t have to cost more. Get the basics down as easily as you can. There are plenty of challenges to follow, on either type of guitar.

Dang, I have plenty opinions today. Phase of the Moon?

Absolutely do the skills lessons, any that you are interested in. They will help prepare you for the the daily challenges. If you don’t finish now, no prob, you’ll come back at some point.

On the other hand, don’t be afraid (as I was) to take on the daily challenges. The point of the daily drills is NOT that you master them, or even come close. The whole point is 1) to establish the habit of playing every damn day and 2) experimenting with things that are scary but also cool, useful and, ultimately, necessary. No one is looking over your shoulder, no one is frowning down at your attempts. 😂 Hey I had to figure this out too!! 🤟

    Hi Joe,

Search “hard reset” for whatever browser you are using, and do that. NOTE that while it should make the daily challenges come up, it may also trash your browsing history.

I suggest trying some of the skills courses no matter what; they are fun and useful.

I think something’s wrong with the scale patterns, starting with #4. I’ll check, fix and upload a new pdf when I can. Will also add some clarifications.

I use both, it’s not a big deal. The fundamentals are the same. Play what you enjoy most!

Hey Sidney here are some more thoughts.

I want to really emphasize the speed thing. If a challenge is “too” challenging, not only is trying to do it at the recommended speed unnecessary, it is downright detrimental. You aren’t obligated in any way to even approach pro guitar teacher Tony’s slowest speed. Seriously.

It’s much more important to just get the basic motions, no matter how long it takes. Then repeat. Over and over and over. Resisting the temptation to go faster than you can handle today. It is this repetition at a manageable speed that will bring progress. Tomorrow, or next week, you will be a little better and faster, guaranteed.

Also, if an exercise is really tough, I suggest making it a favorite and adding it to your daily routine. You will feel great pride and accomplishment when you suddenly realize you’re “getting it”! And everything else will be a little easier because you trained yourself to do something you couldn’t do before.

There’s no way to avoid feeling discouraged now and then. (Ask me how I know…) Just don’t let a bad day cause you to put down the guitar. As someone who has succumbed to that temptation, believe me, that’s the worst possible decision. Maybe I’m reading too much into your post but had to say it.

Even if you never look at any particular entry again… a daily journal is still a good idea, because it gives you structure and helps establish habit. Take it from the ADD Kid 🤪

The skills lessons are fun and helpful, and they are on your schedule, not anyone else’s. Still a good idea to hit the daily challenges even if you only spend a few minutes on them. Establish the habit!

Man I am overflowing with opinions today 😃

Probably I’m just used to thinking electric. If it works, it works!

I’ve been pressing the crap out of my index for a month, and I’m still struggling with barre chords 😅
