  • Disappointed in Zoom change up

Posted by DocBob on April 7, 2021 at 12:03 pm

Hey all – I get change is always difficult but I’m not impressed with the Zoom change up at this time. I’m trying to hold off total judgement but here is what I hope is constructive feedback. First – the last minute change up I think was poorly planned. For someone who knows nothing about Zoom, I had difficulty from the start and no opportunity but to learn on the fly. I never received an “invite” for one of the break out rooms for 6-7 members to share information. And all told, I could only ever see or hear Tony. I never heard any of the comments, jokes, stories, etc. shared by other members. For me, the party was more of an eaves dropping on a phone conversation. 🙁 I also didn’t see any chatting. I tried to activate chat by clicking the “chat icon” but when I tried to actually chat, there was nothing. My comments would not post and I didn’t see any other comments posting. Really a sad experience overall. Help?

I’m really sorry you had a hard time with the chat, and zoom overall. For me it was a positive experience. It was cool to meet new TAC members, and to chat during the call while listening to the stories others had to share. My only feedback would be longer in the break-outs.

I hope next time it goes much smoother for you.

Hi doc sorry you had a bad experience, I’m not sure I can help you with the tech side of zoom I used my girlfriends computer, which luckily she has set up for this. This was my first zoom meeting which is hard to believe after going a year in various forms of lockdown and hating this kind of technology but I found it the opposite I found it really inspiring and motivating and personable. I really enjoyed the format and it helped me connect with the process and feel part of the group. Hope your next experience will be better. ✌️

Actually I thought the Zoom method was great. Best we’ve had so far, by far. Sure, if you are unfamiliar with Zoom then there’s definitely a bit of a learning curve. I’d offer to help but Zoom is very platform/device dependent. I would recommend you go check out some of their help and get familiar with what has become the premier video communication tool over the past 12 months. Actually TAC is a little late to the Zoom world as far as I’m concerned though happy we’re here. Better luck will be yours if you spend some time just getting familiar with it instead of trying to fight the tide @DocBob. Based upon the folks I’ve seen who are now using Zoom I’d say anyone can learn it fairly quickly. Maybe try and attend one of the VOMs as practice with Zoom (even if you don’t play they’re quite entertaining}. Good luck!

Hi guys, I loved to meet people today, thanks for everyone who shared.

I am trying to do the ‘two things’ to enter the competition. I have completed my profile but I do not know how to ‘show my guitar routine form’ how to share it, where is my guitar playing zone and where to answers the 5 questions. Anyone can help me? Thank you

@Danitringale to do the part for your routine create a new thread in the
      “Show Off Your Routine” sub-forum
answer the 5 questions there and attach your photo to the post

Hi Alfred, thanks, I understood the instructions but I cannot find the “Show Off Your Routine” Sub-form, where is it? Thanks

@danitringale, if you are still struggling with this, there is the icon with two thought/speach bubbles in the margin to the left of the page (“Forums”). Inside when you click on the Bubbles, one of the 5 “Forums” is “Show off your Guitar Routine”. Click on that, and the Yellow button to Start a Reply or Topic is what @Alfred was describing. It is not a “sub-forum”, it is a topic you start in the Forum itself.

Hi! Thank you, I managed to work it out also with the help of another person. All there now, so hoping for the best! I have done today lessons, struggled with the barre’ so working on the F right now. One step at the time. Hope you had a good session too.

Hello @DocBob, I am sorry you had an unfulfilling experience. My guess is you need to update to the latest Zoom client. Because of the amount of use over the last year, Zoom has been making a lot of changes resulting in frequent updates.

I hope the next monthly guitar party goes better for you DocBob. The whole reason for these changes is to try to connect to each other better. The replay will be posted by tomorrow if not this afternoon.

I wish I could blame it on not being the latest Zoom client but I actually JUST installed it for the first time on this computer… I would assume if I just installed it, the download would have been the latest and greatest. I guess my ultimate complaint is poor planning on the part of the TAC organizers by doing it as a last minute announcement. I’m all for progress and change, IF it is truly an improvement and well planned to include educating the participants.

Anyone know where it will be posted? I am having a really hard time navigating the new site, and don’t see any intuitive places that it could go.

Hey Doc. Sorry this didn’t work for you. It must be something in your zoom settings. I had a constant stream of chats coming across, almost distracting.

My past experiences with acoustic parties were dismal with lots of drop out lasting up to 5 minutes at times. Zoom went off perfectly. But I’ve used zoom on an iPad for a long time and my settings are tuned in.

Hope this gets better for you.

Hi DocBob @SoCal_Ian had a good idea…try watching a couple of the VOMs as practice. I got on board with this Zoom meeting thing by doing that… I still need to get better acquainted with it …but it’s really nice once you get it working.

Watching the VOMs (whatever the heck that is) might be great but again, the change in format should have been announced in advance so that I might have been able to do some prep in advance instead of during the “party”.

Man that’s rough. I had an issue where I got kicked out after the mini groups, but other than that I really enjoyed using Zoom.

Zoom took umbrage at my sound system, and first created a mute and then dropped me from the call in the Breakout Room. So I missed that part of it, and that would have been really interesting.

Zoom is become too big a part of my life, and if I can help, PM me.

Wow – I’m a lifetime member, and I didn’t even know there was a Zoom meeting. Was a notice sent out? I hope there is a link sent out for the recording…

Michelle, I did receive an eMail notification from TAC. Maybe have a look at your profile and check on your TAC notification settings and your junk folder.

Hi @Michelle_in_PSL – I did get an email about the event, but you had to go to the TAC login page and go to the Daily Challenge page where there was a message at the top – in orange – and click on that to get the zoom meeting log-in info

Hey @DocBob – Please don’t feel too bad – I did get into a break-out room, but got cut off before I could even introduce myself to the others in “my room”. It had to do with not having the latest zoom update (trouble unmuting myself) – and because most of my “room mates” ignored the 2 minute time limit – so in that regard, you didn’t miss very much – IMHO. I think there were too many people there to even have a chance to say anything at all.

@DocBob – I have to say I have mixed feelings about the “Live Guitar Parties” moving to Zoom.

I think it is great for those who can attend; I wish I were one of those people, but I have that work thing I do most weekdays. And then there are time differences, people who are TAC members from across the pond, etc. I understand that it would be close to impossible to find a day/time where most active TAC members could participate. I rarely was able to watch the live shows in the past (think vacation or sick days), so I accept this is just the way it is, no reason for me to complain now.

On the flip side, I didn’t like it at all as a replay. The main issue and I get that there is a learning curve for the TAC team and the members, was the replay was hard to watch. 20+- people in little windows (and I have a 27″ monitor, so it’s not like I was trying to make it work on a phone, tablet, or laptop) made it hard to see Tony, who is the person that I am there to listen to. All the other participants distracted me; I say this as an adult who probably deals with ADD. (Maybe, kinda, sort of, wait, was that a squirrel running by?)

If I were to make a suggestion to the TAC team, it would be to only have Tony visible, except when he is talking to another participant, and then it would be good to see the two of them. I understand that the purpose of the Zoom meetings is to have TAC members be active participants; it is a great idea for those that can be there. But, for me watching the replay, I felt like an outsider.

The good news is, it was the first try, there is plenty of time for learning and improvements.

      @darcelle , cc: TAC Team,

I agree, while it may be useful for Tony to have access to the 209 live participants’ member’s icons, the recording to post for the replay should be in Speaker Display mode, not Gallery. That is a function of who is in control of recording screen.

I hope they pick up on that, it would be a great improvement, especially for those unable to attend.

Also, Team, while I was one of those who got booted by Zoom from the Breakout Room I was in (29 if it helps), having those recorded if used in the future would be a great thing with 6 or 7 in Gallery mode (or at all, I didn’t see where that was happening). It is my understanding it is possible, but the save will be to whoever is recording’s computer, not the Cloud.
