    Hi Kirk,

I will give it a try to share some of my personal wisdom 🙂

Of course it is hard to tell what’s going wrong with your C-chord without seeing you doing it. Also as I am with 43 years a bit younger, I have no clue what struggles older hands have to fight to get them on the right spots of the fretboard. But we have a lot of people at your age here in the community who might understand your situation better and give better advice.

I think important is to take it easy! It is your personal journey and however long it takes to be satisfied with your C-chord or whatever comes next, take your time and try to have fun and just trust in the process of steady practice. It will take time, but it will become better. Just don’t hesitate to move worward. I made that mistake a few times when I was doing other online courses, that I hesitated to move on to new things and leaving my comfort zone of repeating the same things over and over. Of course it is also nice to just have fun with an easy song you already can play through, but it won’t help you that much to get better over time.

If you are fed up with practicing the C-chord just move on and try new things. Even without practicing that particular thing, you will get better, you will figure out issues and once you come back to trying that thing, you may encounter that all of a sudden you can do it way better.

Do the 30 days to play as recommended by Tony and move on. That would be my advice. You can come back to it any time. Moreover, many of the daily challenges involve the C-chord, so you won’t miss practicing it once you move on to the daily challenges.

When I started with TAC I had some previous experinece with other free online course (probably THE most well known free course). It might help you as well to have a look at those and see what they offer and maybe you figure out whats wrong, or find other ways to practice. Also don’t hesitate to ask your friend who recommended TAC to you. She/He may have a look at your playing and fix things together with you.

And don’t forget to have fun! You did yourself a great favor to enjoy to make some music on your own!

    Cheers Markus

P.S.: It may also be worth to either have a look at your guitar setup or even try some other guitars as not every guitar is suited best for everyone especially as a beginner. Chances are that you pick a guitar with other geometrical specs that just suits you better. That may make things a bit easier and less frustrating. But I am sure as long as you stick to it, you will arrange with your current guitar as well. It might just take a bit longer.

  • Hi,

the email lists the 4 benchmark songs that come around every 4 month (or so). This month has Old Man as its benchmark song. Probably next month will have Ain’t no sunshine as its benchmark.

Benchmark songs and weeks are thought to measure your progress. Record yourself, make notes, compare with last time the song was around and celebrate your progress!

If you can’t wait until the two songs come around again, you find last month’s challenges linked in your momentum email, and there you have Hotel California:

For Wagon Wheel you have to go back to october (or wait till february ;O) ):

Another great exercise to practice chord transitions are the one minute changes as taught by Justin.

Take a pair of chords you need to change between, then for one minute try as much changes as you can between the two (count!) doing one strum per change. Here it’s not about perfection but speed. So each change counts, no matter how perfect it sounds.

Note however, that the method should go in companion with an exercise as described by @Moose408 which has its focus on perfection.

Thanks for sharing this! It’s nice to see what others can make out of the improvisation challenges. It’s like learning a language: Listen, read and speak is what makes you better and you did some great examples to listen to on your Youtube channel!

    Hi,

I am rather new to TAC and guitar playing. I purchased FW recently and was also waiting a few weeks after my purchase to not overwhelm myself.

However, I started to dive into the material just this week. So my advice: just give it a try and start at once. You own the course, you can go at your own pace and always repeat things, when you feel you couldn’t grasp it the first second or nth time.

What Tony recommends is, when you don’t have the time or mood to do both, finish FW and then go back to the dailies, on that day. But I understand the feeling of missing something, as dailies vanish on a monthly scale. However, they repeat roughly on a yearly scale, so you will get a chance to redo the lessons. Another approach, if there is a week you would like to do asap is to click the heart and add it to your favorites.

But as you said that you have enough time. Just do it! The material is so well presented I don’t think that it will be too much! Just be aware of a bug on the current page: on small devices like my smartphone the link to FW leads to the old version of FW! The new version is available via tonypolecastro.com/courses/fretboard-wizard whereas the old version has tonypolecastro.com/courses/fretboard-wizard-method instead.

Might be wrong but I remember that he mentioned in an AT episode that he bought a foot stool as he has this bad habit of putting a foot on the other

That’s a great idea to overcome the current vacuum introduced by stopping the Acoustic Tuesday show.

For those who like me just stumbled upon Tony recently, I may add one show that fits to the current TAC week:

Hi @TammyS and welcome to TAC,

Don’t be to disappointed if the site is currently broken on your favorite Webbrowser.

Keeping track with new developments is a challenge for many websites. If a browser gets updates that cause issues on webpages that worked just fine previously it is a matter of time you have to give a WebDev to fix things.

It’s always good not rely on a single browser. Firefox, safari( Mac) edge (windows) are good alternatives until the TAC has fixed the issues on chrome.

Definitely report the issue to the support!

I also recognized the link in the email and was wondering how to access that overview of previous month from within TAC.

I recently had a few of such surprises on the actual web sites. Things that I didn’t recognize before, like that shopping cart icon or the wall of love. So my feeling is that they slowly add some new features. Probably one of the most frequently asked questions here in the forum is how to access older lessons. It would be great if that need of people is seen and added. On the one hand, it doesn’t make much sense that content is only accessible if you took the chance to add it to your personal list of favs. On the other hand, one of TACs unique selling points is that you should not need to worry what to play. Do the daily challenge, don’t look back to missed challenges, don’t feel the need to catch up. From that perspective, easy access to all previous challenges would break the concept and could render TAC to be yet another guitar tutorial page.
