@briplaysjovie I’ve heard of hyper mobility before, but you’re the first to ask a question about it, that I’m aware of, in the forums, and that’s great. There are probably others out there too afraid to ask the question or simply give up. My understanding of the syndrome is that it actually has to do with surrounding muscles not being strong enough to keep the joints from collapsing or turning.

Focus on finger strengthening. Many of Tony’s lessons focus on finger strengthening, but there are many YouTube videos that cover exercises. I would incorporate these along with your daily stretches. Try not to hyperextend when stretching to avoid the dreaded tendonitis that can out your playing on hold for extended periods.

You might consider going to physical therapy too. They could show the safest and most effective ways to build the muscles and strength up.

There isn’t going to really be a quick fix to the hyper mobility. I’m not sure how taping your joints would help with the matter. Also how would you get the arch needed in your fingers and hands to play?

Here’s a YouTube video on hyper mobility and guitar. I can’t comment on her suggestions, but I think she’s a physical therapist.

@Moonhare Darren Congratulations on your 2nd TACiversary!

The performance was outstanding. For not having guitar experience before TAC, I’m just in awe of your playing ability. I’d like to see more of you in the forums, but I gather you’re quite busy with gigs and keyboards too.

Hey @avandewater1gmail-com and welcome to the TAC community! When I first started, I had absolutely no experience on the guitar. I did the 30 days to play, the 6 chords, and stretching before I began the dailies, but everyone is different and this is your journey, so there’s no right or wrong way to approach the lessons.

With the dailies, practice for a minimum of 10 minutes and mark the lesson complete. You can still practice it, but the goal is progress, not perfection. Don’t shoot for mastering the skills. You’ll see skills reintroduced as time goes on, and the lessons rotate back around about every 8 months. I guarantee that your abilities will improve doing this. If you particularly like something or want to revisit it, hit the heart in the lower right of the video to favorite it. The video will be saved under your profile in Favorites

    Have fun!

@atroutcatcher Strumming is difficult to learn and master, but when you finally are able to do so, you’ll feel so good. I’ve spent 3 years getting comfortable with it. Now that may sound daunting, but it wasn’t horrible throughout the 3 years. It’s that I became more fluid, was able to hold the pick more loosely, and I was able to strum a multitude of patterns.

First thing is to make sure your pick isn’t too thick. Over time, I found that the ideal pick for me was .60 mm. When I first started though, I went thinner than that. You won’t meet as much resistance with the strings with a thinner pick. Try a variety of thicknesses (typically thinner for strumming and thicker for flatpicking).

I use Gorilla Snot to help keep the pick in my hand and from turning as I strum. It will allow you to learn to strum more fluidly too. Try thinking of the pick as a feather that you are simply brushing up and down in a smooth, soft motion. When you strum down, angle the pick so the tip is higher and your brushing your hand down. On your upstroke, flick your wrist so that the pick has the tip facing downward as you flick your wrist up. Bring it up smoothly, but only strum the bottom few strings. You don’t do a full strum on the up-strum. When I say flick, I’m not saying to do an actual flick, but and exaggerated up down using your wriist. Hope that makes sense.

My strumming was too hard and clunky initially. The strings will make noise if you strum lighter. Try just strumming with the tip of the pick touching the strings. You might miss a down strum or up-strum occasionally, but that’s normal.

I watched a lot of guitarists playing to see the motion of their hand. This helped me practice over and over what I observed. Slowly it got easier, and then seemingly overnight it all clicked and fell into place.

Hang in there, and my motto is keep on plunking!

Very cool song with cool progressions and lick. I can’t say I’m familiar with this Cat Stevens song. Really enjoyed it, and I thought you did a great job with the strumming and chord transitions. You have nice vocals. You’re a lot like me ( but I don’t have nice vocals), you sing softly. I’d like to see you project a little more. You had great energy and volume on the guitar. Try and sing the same or above that. I know, it’s a process. One which I still struggle with myself.

@Nilswhyte007 Welcome back! Life does have a way of interrupting our true passions. I have always found a way to squeeze in at least the minimum wage of 10 minutes. Even if this means just doing the daily, or stretching, a few licks, or scales, etc. I’m glad you’re not going to give into letting other things deter you from pursuing your dreams.

@Jnc51 I think it’s awesome that you want to participate in the Quarterly party! Yes, they are the 1st Wednesday of the beginning of the quarter. You should receive an email from TAC, and there is usually a banner at the top of the website announcing when it’s in session. If you aren’t receiving emails, check your account to make sure your current email is listed, and if it is and you’re not receiving emails, I suggest you contact Support.

    🤩😃👏<div>
</div><div> Awesome!! Keep it up! Hope everything works out and you find balance.</div><div>
</div><div> Just an fyi, typically when responding to others tag them by using the ampersand sign before their screen name and click on the drop-down when it appears. This will notify that person that there’s a response or message to them (typically will show on the top right bell of their screen). I tried doing this with your screen name, but it didn’t come up. You might want to change your nickname, which is your user screen name (something a little more unique than just Brian. Maybe your first name and first lett of your last name, or a nickname or something about you that explains who you are, etc.) on your profile page and we can see if that allows others to message or tag you. Another way to tag someone with a response to their post is to hit the reply button on their post (upper right of the response post will be a left arrow to use to respond).
