That’s about the gist of it. 🙂

Hi @Emjaye I think many of us have struggled with this. The pinky and ring finger share a ligament, which makes it tough to have independence. You have the right idea for training, but I’d take it a step further and do what I call finger exercises. Numbering your fingers 1-4, with 1 being your index’s and 4 being your pinky then practice going between 2 fingers (different combinations) down and then up each open string. Example, Fingers 1 & 2 playing 1 on 1st fret and finger 2 on 2nd fret. Do this each string (try to have the playing flow, not staccato like). Don’t reverse order coming back up. Keep it in the same order used going down. Then do fingers 1&3, then 1&4, then 2&1, w&2 and so on. You’ll be practicing each finger being independent. For the pinky, practice 1&4, 2&4, 3&4, and then 4&1, 4&2, 4&3, etc.. Up and down the strings and try and stay fluid, not staccato like. Hope this makes sense. You’ll end up practicing every combination of two fingers. Feel free to reach out to me with further questions or the need for clarification. I could do a video if necessary.

Orangewood guitars. Reasonably priced, set up well, easy to play and sound fantastic.

Wow, you’ve been out through the gambit @rdf1967 . I’m so happy the surgery went well and you’re on the mend. There is another current or former member (not sure if he’s still a member – I’ll see if I can find him in the member list and get back with you if I find him) of TAC that is missing a finger or two, and he plays beautifully. He has compensated so well – I couldn’t tell you exactly how, but he definitely overcame the disability and succeeded, and you can too. Just keep persevering , looking for information online from others that have overcome similar situations and been able to conquer the guitar.

Hey @polarpeak75 I have a closet full of different manufacture and thickness and coverings of strings. I usemdiffent strings on different guitars, because each guitar has its own character and it will tell you which strings are best for it. The trick is to try enough strings and tensions until you find the one that sings on your guitar. Have fun trying out different strings. The ones Imise the most are D’Addario Phospher Bronze Light, Ernie Ball Earthwood Light and Martin Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Light

Well that’s just amazing and full of all sizes of wins @the-old-coach ! I’m inspired by your enthusiasm and commitment. But I feel like I have so much on my plate right now between the dailies, the lessons and homework and practices that my guitar teacher assigns, and the extraneous songs aim working on, like taking a ukelele class and songs I’m working on. I’m finding it difficult to carve out time for Fretboard Wizard. I could have my guitar teacher switch gears to the fretboard, theory, modes, etc. that way I’d be aligned with TAC and I could add FBW to my lesson plan.

@GerryB56 ooh, that could have been dangerous. I think I worry more with the higher strings, and I always count my blessings that I didn’t take an eye out. Hope you were wearing glasses or safety glasses. I wonder if there was a flaw with the string that added to the A string breaking. That’s a tough one to break.. Yeah, I keep a closet full of strings from various manufacturers for my guitars. I like @Cadgirl s recommendation. Be careful and happy plunking.

Thank you so much. Your response was heartwarming and meant the world to me. I’m glad you liked the song. I thought it was such a sad song, but I liked how he sang the song. I’m sure I didn’t do it any justice.

LOL – It’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. It is so hard to get them back out once they’ve entered the abyss.

Quite a detailed explanation, and I actually understood it LOL. Thank you @jumpinjeff as I was not aware of the mechanics of breakages of strings on the guitar. I’ve actually never had one break, but many have forewarned me, especically when restring a guitar, to wear eye protection. However, I can appreciate your explanation and see value in it. I like analytical, engineering type minds 🙂

Aw, I’ve missed you. Thanks so much @cadgirl. The guitar is so much fun to play. Picking on it is another story completely, so I’ll be sticking with strumming on it. Hope you are well.

Glad you enjoyed the performance @Kitman , and thank you for the kind words and for indicating that you were able to discern inflection in the vocals. That means my practice isn’t for naught. And yes, I’m enjoying the 12 string a lot. Who woulda thunk?!? 🙂
