less expensive guitars for road trips
Posted by jimhat on June 17, 2021 at 9:33 amI think it was a few months ago that Tony shared some info on good guitars for about $300 and under. Does anyone recall that and how I might access that information? We are about to take a few road trips and I want to keep playing/practicing but I would much rather do it with a less expensive guitar. Thanks

I’m not sure of the video you refer to with Tony. You could try and search on YouTube for it. Some good inexpensive guitars can be found at Orangewood guitars. Also, the Taylor Gs Mini is fairly inexpensive and smaller and sounds great.

Hi @jimhat , I think Fender makes some half decent all wood acoustic guitars in that price range and less🤩. They should be easy to find at a local music shop. Have you tried Craigslist?🤔

I travel quite a bit, and sometimes do it on a motorcycle. I recommend checking out a carbon fiber guitar. They are awesome for being immune to heat, humidity and rain. I have several. The one I use for motorcycle traveling does not sound as good as an expensive guitar but it is still fun to play and more than that is easy to practice on or “play around a campfire” without having to treat it gently. I think they sell some on amazon now. I also have a Mcpherson sable (carbon fiber), which if I could only have one guitar, this would be it. A joy to play. Check out used guitars you may find one you like. I just realized that I am playing one in my profile pic which is at the top of Mt Lassen (a 2 week motorcycle trip my wife and I took ).

I purchased 2 used acoustics from shopgoodwill.com auctions. Both were under $60 + minimal shipping costs. I was lucky that they just needed new strings, and they play beautifully. Note: trick to winning auctions is to be on it in the minute before it ends to outbid others. Great site though.

great suggestion @Loraine , My last frugal good buy was at an Iwo Beach pawn shop picked up a fender which now lives on the sailboat.

just downloaded the site and set up an account. Thanks for the info. I guess the TAC community is still alive in spite of the changes.

When I travel I use a Martin Backpacker. It is easy to transport and has a full neck for practicing. It has a hammer dulcimer type quality which gives songs a little variation and is fun. It solicits regular questions from other travelers and TSA has had me open it periodically to show it is not a hunting rifle or genuine Axe.

I bought a Gretsch Jim Dandy a few years ago, $169 on Amazon, to take camping. It’s parlor size, has kind of a tinny sound but is great fun to play. We’re out a lot in extreme cold to pretty high heat and it has held up very well considering all the banging around and temperature changes I’ve subjected it to.

Thanks much to everyone for sharing your helpful comments! I just saw them yesterday when I decided to check my messages. I’m feeling kind of sheepish because I was waiting around, expecting to see an email notification that someone had seen my question. After a week, I began thinking, hmmm, I thought there would be at least one response. Wow, what a wonderful surprise when I finally checked my messages! I’m following up the leads you all mentioned and that video by Tony was the one I was thinking about. Thanks again! And I will never again doubt the helpfulness and sincerity of this community of guitar geeks. (And I will check my messages more often!)

I just went to my local pawn shop and found a Jay Turser for about $90. I made sure it had a straight neck and plopped a new set of strings on it for when I work out of town. If it gets damaged or stolen… WHO CARES!!! At least I can keep on jamming 😉

I bought a Recording King dirty 30’s single 0/parlor size that is decent for about $225. It even has a pickup although i dont plug in.
For travel you want:
Smaller size and Less solid wood, more laminate although a solid top is prob a necessity. You also want it to be cheap cuz this is more or less your beater guitar
