First ‘play for us’ song. ‘The night Pat Murphy Died – by Great Big Sea’
Posted by Whibs on September 21, 2021 at 3:40 pmOK Team,
This is the first song that I’ve actually learned from start to finish, and play on my own (ie not along with a youtube video). It all feels a bit rushed, so I don’t have as much fun with the lyrics as I assume I will when this becomes more practiced/polished. But here goes.
Thanks TAC Team.

Let me know if the link works… I have the video set to private… as I don’t want the whole world of internet trolls to get their hateful little fingers on it. haha.

Nice job! Learning a whole song and playing it is a big step for all of us. It had a lot of lyrics, so kudos. Well done on the chord changes. The link works by the way!

Great job on the song Whibs! That’s alot to remember learning a whole song.

Thanks @stevieblues
Definitely some polish to be added, but felt good to get one under the belt. Cheers

Great Job!! Keep up the good work , Great big sea has bunch of good songs, the sea shanties are a great way to learn play and sing!

@Whibs, you have made a major step by posting your first video. Irish tunes are great fun. Strong first effort, keep it up!

The whole process of recording and posting a video should get easier with your next one. Took me forever to get the video recording on my I-Phone to transfer correctly to my computer, until I used airdrop. Let’s hear another from you @Whibs . Hope you will be able to join in for the October 6 live TAC party!

Hi @Whibs ;
I agree with all the comments, that you have done an amazing job. This project is jam packed with “small wins”.
First, you mention struggling with the strumming pattern. You mention that you were able to find something that worked by watching Tony’s video on how to work up a song. Let me just say before I continue, you did a really good job on the strumming. Ok, let me say, that the foundation of music is a beat, the rhythm. So to get the “feel” of a song, you must get the strumming right. Even when we are more advanced on our guitar journey, this can be a challenge. You have found the secret to this common challenge right at the beginning of your guitar journey. That’s a huge #small win.
Next, you said you felt a “little rushed”. That means you were tense, which makes it very difficult to play. So that’s another big #small win. To play and sing this well with tension is really difficult to do. But another #small win is this opens the door to your learning another huge lesson that challenges people well along on their guitar journey. Recognize that tension and learn to let it go. If you can learn to play without tension early in your guitar journey your progress will be much faster and far more fun.
Third, you recorded and posted. There are a number of #small wins contained in that accomplishment. You have made a wonderful start on a lifetime journey of fun and fellowship. Music is so fulfilling and the guitar is a marvelous instrument. I look forward to seeing more of your progress.

@MikeGaurnier . Wow, thanks for the full breakdown and the supportive words. You’re definitely right about being tense.. and I’ll certainly take notice of it moving forward.

I’m glad to pass the help I’ve received along to others. By the way, I’m STILL learning both to get the correct “feel” through my strumming and to release tension. That’s why I’m so impressed with your performance here.

I call that strumming pattern, “dancing” with guitar, and you did it well. Figuring out your approach to a song is the key! Congratulations on a great job!
Love the weight-room acoustics! 😄
