Anyone else use this “Pinky G Chord!?”
I’m not sure what else to call it. Three finger pinky G? 3GP? (See the attached chord diagram.) Tony doesn’t teach this in his TAC 30 Days course, but this is how I learned the G chord back in high schoool (circa 1970). I like this version, because it’s easy to go to a G7. I’m in the process of learning Tony’s 4-finger G chord, but my muscle memory is putting up a fight. Comments appreciated.

@OhWowMan Yep, use it all the time. This is one of 6 G chord go to shapes that make playing easier for me.

Yes @OhWowMan , I use that 2-3-4 shape along with the 1-2-3 when playing an open G – just depends on which chord I’m transitioning from. If I’m coming from a D or an A, then I’m going to the 1-2-3. If I’m coming from an Am or a C, then I do the 2-3-4. Hope that makes sense. I only use the 4 finger G when a picking pattern or an exercise calls for it. When playing a song, I use one of the 3 finger G’s when playing open chords.

Yep, that’s my favored shape since it frees up the index finger for all kinds of shenanigans. Ultimately, though, it’s good to have access to all the shapes, since like @Bill_Brown said, transitions to some chords are more graceful from one form than another. There are some songs where I’ll use that G and the four finger G at different points in the same song, depending on where I need to go next. 🙂

Yes, this is my “go to” G chord also. It eases the transition to G7 and also frees up your index and middle to hammer on to fourths and fifths or pick up other complimentary notes.

Use the three finger G in songs where you switch to a C chord and the 4 finger for songs where you switch to a D chord.

Here’s my 2 cents.
Yes, I have seen it. It is my primary G major chord. For me, it is not a matter of where I’m going or where I’ve come from. I have used this G chord exclusively for years. However, I have worked hard to be able to use the 4 finger chord Tony teaches. Why? Simple. There are many songs that simply don’t sound right if you don’t play that chord. The Eagles, for instance, usually, if not always, used the 4 finger G chord. You won’t get their sound without it.
