  • Fretboard Wizard! THEN, NOW, or LATER?

Posted by OhWowMan on March 8, 2022 at 2:20 am

Hi TAC Family! Thanks for being here!

When I signed up for Tony’s Acoustic Challenge (four and a half months ago), I also purchased the “Fretboard Wizard” course sight unseen. Back THEN, I had no idea what it was about, or what I was getting myself into. Fretboard Wizard was pitched as an add-on, essentially a limited time offer. I thought it might be a valuable tool, so I paid the extra money for it. (Tony’s a good salesman, with a great marketing video! I think we can all agree on that!) So, NOW, I am wondering when is the best time for me to take the course? Should I wait until LATER? Because… During a recent Acoustic Tuesday show, Tony mentioned some changes to the course. Is that right? And, he said those changes would include some live interactions during the course. Am I remembering that correctly?

We’re all in this together. We’re all relying on each other for help, guidance and support. Again, thank you!

Be Nice and Play Guitar! 😊🎸☮

@OhWowMan You can take the course whenever the spirit moves you since you own it for life. As for changes, it’ll be interesting to see what they are once they eventually roll out the updates. As for the live interactions, Tony does this typically twice a year when Fretboard Wizard is opened up for new registrants and a group goes through it at the same time. The live aspect has to do with Q&A’s that he does live. That being said, you can begin the course now and revisit portions prior to the live parties, or you can wait to go through it with a group of people.

@ Loraine , I am super geeked to hear about the upcoming Fretboard wizard changes. I did struggle with it, but I went to the community for help. I was surprised so many people that didn’t do that. Remember that @OhWowMan , always go to the community with issues. Someone will help out.

@Loraine Thanks for your reply. When you say I “own it for life,“ I presume that means as long as I maintain my membership? I won’t have to pay for it again next year?

Hey @OhWowMan You own it regardless of whether you maintain your TAC membership. You’ll still be able to access it.

@OhWowMan , you can take the Fretboard Wizard in little chunks. Good for you for purchasing it at the beginning ( I did the same). You will have a love / hate relationship with the fretboard wizard. It’s tough because it’s something you probably haven’t thought about before. It took me a few tries at it to understand it. But, Tony puts it in such easy terms you will get it in time and you’ll thank yourself for taking it. It will put you on the road a greatness. J

I would wait to take the course until later. It’s mostly useful for people trying to either play by ear or write their own music. You would probably have no use for it until you reach the intermediate stage. It’s basically two different things. It teaches you how to find the notes in key of a song by ear but of course you can always cheat and just look this up on the Internet nowadays, and the other half of it shows you how to make alternate chord shapes in other places on the neck besides just the open positions using the cage method which is more advanced than most people will ever need, unless of course attempting to compose your own music

All in all it’s worth taking if you’re interested in music theory and understanding the concepts behind the music but as a beginner it’s probably a little too advanced

@OhWowMan You made a wise investment when you purchased the FBW course. It will open a lot of guitar doors for you.

You can start the course any time you want. It’s yours! At least you can review it before the group starts up. It’s all up to you.

I’ve taken the course 3 times. I take it for review. Lots of useful information! I too plan on taking the course again with the group & try to attend the live sessions. The FBW live question and answer sessions are very useful!!! If you can’t make the live session, Tony will record and post it so you can review it on your own time. Like @Loraine said, I want to see where the changes are to the course. 😊🧙‍♂️😎

I would recommend taking it sooner rather than later. I found it very helpful along with the skills course Navigating the Fretboard. There are a lot of bits of info that can help you right away but you’ll find that you will want to refer back to it often as you progress. If there are changes, you’ll be able to catch up easily. Good luck.

I’m with @MoochasPoochas in “take it sooner than later”. I gained great value from Fretboard Wizard and it accelerated my learning curve to hyper space speed. Theory reduces memory work and allows playing with others to be an easier reality. You know there is only a half step between sad and happy.
