Tragedy in Texas (May be too Graphic for some viewers)
Posted by albert_d on October 2, 2023 at 4:04 pmAfter the Fretboard Summit and visiting with Bob Taylor, I decided a Taylor GS Mini Acoustic Electric KOA Natural was my next new guitar. I bought it from Guitar Center on September 7th. I played it daily from then until September 25th. We were packing to leave Port Aransas Beach with friends who invited us to share their RV. The Bride of my Youth (for 51 years) moved the guitar in its bag near the front drivers seat as she cleared for packing. The RV owner starting slinging in the expanded panel and the hydraulic mechanism crushed the guitar. I heard a crack and crunch and looked around in horror. End of story. Luthier says cannot be repaired. Nobody’s fault, but tragic, nevertheless.
(Replacement in process).

OMG @albert_d ! That’s so unfortunate. You’re a much better person than I would be in that situation. I would have found the friend to be responsible for it. I have GS Mini Koa, and it sounds and plays great. What a shame. Will you get a new one?
-
Yes, definitely. I only played it for a few weeks but I liked it a lot.
-

Oh no 🥺 Sounds like a very unfortunate accident . I hope you are able to get another one, so you can keep playing.
-
From the photo the damage doesn’t look all that bad. Maybe get a second opinion from another luthier. Also I like your strap choice, the colors go well with the Koa.
-
Aww that is quite sad, so glad that will be able to replace it.
-
Yes, but what does it sound like now? Perhaps it could be called a “soundport”.
I am using levity to hide my crying heart. Condolences @albert_d -
Some wood filler and strong glue… could make a nice guitar for a beginner or a child with neat looking homemade repair… ?
That being said, very sorry about this unfortunate accident, lovely guitar

I’d contact Jim Hewett at Southpaw Guitars in Houston, he can fix anything. One of the most talented Luthiers you will find. He’s also in Facebook under Hewett Guitars – https://www.facebook.com/jim.hewett.581

Omg, I am so sorry about your loss. That’s why I am afraid of traveling 2 hours east to my daughters. I am picking up a new guitar while I am in the city. I hope neither will break on trip home.

ughhhh… what a bummer! assuming since it cant be repaired – I wonder if you could make some kind of art piece out of it just so it can move the art world of music to the art world of sculpture and live on !
-
Oh no Albert.. that is so sad but I know you will get another and together a new relationship will be formed. So nice to meet you at Summit btw.
-
That physically hurts to see. Hope the new one will bring you as much joy as the recently departed.

</div>What a frustrating mess. However, Before you give up, I would send it Directly to Taylor to see if any remedy’s could be available. They do take on challenges and like the rest of us REALLY do not want to see a Taylor put to rest. WjV

Being a Taylor owner for the last 15 years I would definitely contact Taylor to see if they might be able to do something to save it. If you have homeowners or renters insurance you might want to check with your agent to see if this might be covered. We have a class A motorhome with dual slides and I always check to be sure that there is nothing in the way when extending and retracting. Accident or not, if I had done this, I would be getting you a new guitar. Good friendships are worth more than a guitar.
