Summertime – George Gershwin
Posted by Moonhare on December 10, 2023 at 5:46 amIt is winter in England – dark, cold
and wet – so what better than this classic song to get you out of
the gloom? Open tuning and trying to fit in lots of different
techniques I’ve learned at TAC over the past 2 and a half years. I
also tried to come up with an interesting set of chords including
triads further up the neck to give it a different tone to the online
lessons. Pretty happy with this arrangement even if I fluffed a
couple of bits in this recording.-

That was fantastic. I really liked the slides right before the fingerpicking and the fingerpicking was awesome. The triads were a nice touch. Great job!

The singing was fantastic. It’s obvious that you have a lot of practice singing.
Did not mean to imply anything about the singing just because I omitted it in my original praise. 😀

I feel more at home with backing vocals to be honest. But I’ll take the compliment!

You’ve got that guitar purring! So great listening to you! ✌🏼

@Moonhare He’s back!! So good to hear you again Darren! Fantastic rendition of a great classic, with a few spins. Loved the slides, the triads, the fingerpicking. Keep ‘em coming! I have such a difficult time taking what ai learn in the lessons and applying it to an original or a rendition of another song. All I know is I’ve gotten better, but I can’t pretend to be at the same level as you.

The last time I heard you play you had really made so much progress. The journey’s the thing, as they say. And thanks for your kind words.

Don’t know why I said open tuning. It’s actually standard tuning!

Well after improvising behind and and over you I marked this as one my first favorite. I want to lea4n this from watching your arrangement of it. Nice to see you again in the forums. Maybe winter did us a favor!

Hey thanks for that. After reading it I tried playing along and had some fun fumbling through a pentatonic lead!

Thanks. Nothing fancy but I was very pleased with the arrangement.

It really is a classic isn’t it! So many do this song so I just wanted to put my own spin on it.

Smooth pick to mouth transition! Love it when someone plays in different voicing, suspensions, add9, add+7. etc.

It’s all fairly easy stuff but stringing together different techniques in an arrangement that made sense was my goal here.

Hey Darren that was beautiful, loved everything about it, great production…you are very talented, and therefore inspirational! Motivates me to keep on keeping on…and practice those things Im not so good at…loved the singing and your arrangement, how you mixed in all those different techniques. Fingerpicking was great with that percussion👍😀 Going to try to pick this one up from your video so thanks for posting. Keep them coming! Beauty day in southern Ontario, sunny and mild🙏

Late reply sorry. Caught the flu from my schoolteacher wife. Thank you so much for those wonderful comments. Made my day! It’s all about taking the lessons Tony teaches and stringing them together. Great fun. Good luck on your journey.
