  • Two Years and still plugging away!

My story is similar to many others. Life long dream of playing guitar. Numerous starts and quits and after 35 years still cant play.

Two years ago, I fully retired after 40 years in Law Enforcement. Now in my early 60’s, we moved to a lake is a small community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I had always dreamed of owning a Martin Guitar. But could not justify the expensive if it was going to be another start and quit endeavor.

Two year ago today, while scroll, I came across someone selling a HD28 Martin, about 80 miles away. All my dreams reignited. Could this time be different? If I buy this Martin, I have to commit long term.

Long story – Short – I did it. But, I needed a program, lessons, something to commit to? After a week of searching on line, I came a crossed TAC. And my journey began. I have committed to playing everyday and have only missed 2 days in 2 years. I may not play as long as I want, but Guitar is now apart of my life. Two weeks ago, I had left rotator cuff surgery and was worried I would not be able to continue. But, I continued to strum and after 5 days was able to reach the 1st fret and play chords again.

Year 3, I hope to commit to more time playing. Thanks Tony!

Great story about finding that Martin! I’ve been playing on budget guitars and for a while I thought it could be a mistake. Would I learn more quickly on a better instrument?

Still debating, I’m constantly reading up and shopping for gear, mostly low end stuff, a little bit of mid level. I will treat myself to a nice unit in a few years time. I have taught myself how to set up my own guitars so even though my Donner is inexpensive, it plays with a soft touch, I don’t think it’s holding me back.

Sadly years before I started playing myself, fate brought me close to hauling in a dream axe myself. My mom was dating a man in his mid 80s who had suffered an aneurism and no longer could continue his guitar hobby. She even asked me if I could help her get rid of his guitars. He had close to a dozen electrics in his guitar room along with amps and pedals. I didn’t know the first thing about guitars at the time and wavered on helping them out. Not long after their relationship ended before I could even take a quick inventory.

I often think about what I missed out on.

35 Years ago, I bought my first Guitar, a Sigma. (Knockoff Martin). I think my Guitar Journey has been successful this time because of many factors. The Martin is one because of the investment. But also Timing was a factor and finding the right program to follow for me, TAC.

I am a little bit of a Guitar Junky. I am always search the local market for my “next one”. On my One Year Anniversary of TAC, I went out and bought two Guitars. A Taylor Urban Ash GT, and a Carbon Fiber Enya. Both different and unique in there own way.

Because of my recent shoulder surgery, I have been playing the Taylor, because it is very light.

Whatever it takes for me to continue my Journey!

One of my best friends ( who unfortunately moved to the other side of the country ) was a professional musician …. has a guitar room full of stuff. I need a 2nd guitar to keep up at my cottage for the next 5 months so I can keep up my guitar playing. I asked him what his favourite guitars are. He said he owns an expensive Taylor that sounds really nice, but he also has a cheap Washburn that is a close 2nd ! Perhaps it’s less about the ax and more about the lumberjack ! LOL
