90 day goal ( Play a song at a jam in public)
I recall Tony’s story when he was asked to play a 2 hr session and wrote all the chords on a little sheet of paper. Then when he was up on stage he couldn’t read the small print! OMG! Now I know the gut wrenching feeling he must of had that first time!
My story starts like this.
Last week, Friday the 14th, I completed one of my biggest 90 day goals. I sang 2 songs in front of 40-ish or so people including my wife, but not at all what I was expecting. See I thought when Tommy (my wife’s best friends husband owner of the barn every one jams at on 3rd Friday) said, “Rodney I have a spot for you so come out and play”. He meant for me to do a solo. LOL nope that’s not what he meant!
I was ready as I could be, I just knew I was going to knock it right out of the park because I practiced both songs over and over for a good solid month thinking this was good enough to complete my solo. Tommy announced my name, it was show time!
So I sat down adjusting my mic, then the guy behind me said ” what key is it in” ? Then I realized! OMG! This is not a solo! I have a band backing me! I said to myself, ” oh well can’t be to bad I know these songs by heart.” So I showed him my tablet then he told the band and they did a thumbs up. I started off into the first verse of the ride by David Allen Cole.
Do you recall the episode of Mayberry when Barny was in the marching band and how off they sounded when they played? Yep that’s how it started!
So my first solo started with a full band, feedback speakers blazing back at me, a drummer behind me, bass guitar to my right along with lead guitar and a few other acoustics. I was so nervus my right leg was shaking, sweating like crazy and boy was I lost in everything going on around me!
But we stumbled right on through the first song, then when we finished everyone clapped. So I packed up my gear put it back in the truck and sat down to listen to the band and others play and sing, thinking to myself ” WOW! I’m glad that’s over.”
After about 30 minutes Tommy called my name again, Saying ” hey come up here and do your second song”! Dang- – – – I forgot I told him I had two!
So…. we and the band stumbled through song two.
By reading this you may be thinking I had a terrible time but really it was the best time I ever had, even though I was nervus as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
When the evening was over and the band was packing up, several players invited me out again. They also where very supportive in every way possible. By telling me to come out, sit in the whole night and play rhythm guitar after your song. A really nice group.
So you bet! I will be playing again in October. I will ask Tommy for a solo slot next time!
