  • For Safari users – SOLUTION

Posted by Derrick on March 25, 2021 at 10:34 pm

It took me a couple of days to figure out that the main page does not function properly in Safari, the default browser for Mac computers, iPhones and iPads. This is surprising because standard protocol in web development these days is to always test in Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

SOLUTION: You’ll need to use a different browser for now. Firefox is working for me, and it appears Chrome is working for others.

EDIT-See solution Lance offers below (steps for clearing Safari’s cache). Here’s a link to additional steps for clearing the cache on mobile devices.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-clear-cache-on-safari-browser?op=1

A picture of what the landing page looks like for me when I use Safari is attached. (Embedding images isn’t working for me.)

Having rough experiences with the site changes so far. The site seems to perform slower than the previous site, despite having the fastest possible Internet connection you can get. And the lack of diversity in the imagery used throughout the site is noticeable. Really hoping these get ironed out over the next couple of months.

The website wasn’t working for me in Safari either. The “Shift and refresh” thing wasn’t working either. I went to the History tab and cleared all History (will be paying for that on absolutely everything else I do online over the next few weeks I imagine). But I guess TAC is worth it … I guess.

@Jesse W, The “Shift and Refresh” didn’t work for me either on my MacBook Pro until I did the stuff in my other post here. I was also worried i would lose my History, but it’s all still there.

I was having the same problem but I fixed it on mine. I’m using Big Sur (v11.2.3). Search of the Internet suggested this:

    Go into Safari>Preferences

Choose the Advanced Tab on the far right.

At the bottom of the advanced screen is an item called Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar. It’s probably off. Check it to turn it on.

    Exit Preferences

Now you should see a Develop Menu Item in the Safari Menu at the top of the screen.

Hover your cursor on it and a long menu will show up. About halfway down is an item called “Empty Caches” It also shows a shortcut key set of Shift\CMD\E

    Click on Empty Caches.

Since I’m a belt and Suspenders type of guy, I then did the Keyboard version a couple of times too.

One more thing. A secondary way to take care of this is to hold Shift and hit the Refresh thingy in the URL bar. I did that one too. (You can’t be too thorough with these things, you know.)

Then close Safari, cross your fingers, open it back up, and go back to the page. If everything went as planned, you should see the Daily Challenge, the Calendar, and some other items.

It worked for me and I hope it works for you.

That worked! Thanks for the reminder to clear the Cache, Lance.

Hey Lance, thanks for the heads-up on clearing the cache, it seems to have done the trick for me. 🙂

The Daily Challenge isn’t working on my iPhone using Safari, but when I just tried on my MacBook Air, it’s working fine on Safari. First time trying, didn’t have to clear cache or anything. I’m on a 2020 M1 MBA using OS Big Sur 11.2.3.

I thought maybe I was doing something wrong on my iPhone. Glad to realize I’m not the only one who can’t get to the daily exercise. I’m sure the developers are aware and will work a fix since iOS devices and macs are a big part of the user community

Yes, I was surprised too about the inconsistency too since all development should include iOS, OS, Android devices (laptop, phones and tablets) and the big 3 browsers. I wound up putting Firefox on my iPad Pro so I could get the daily lessons to work. I will have to clean up the Safari browser since that is usually the browser I work with.

This worked for me… Now I just hope they fix the site speed. This might be the slowest site I’ve used in years (about 10 second page loads), I feel like I’m back on dialup. :😂

If you are using Safari and clear your cache (go to settings and scroll down for Safari) then the site will look and work OK (at least it does for me).

Like you all, I am finding the new site to be incredibly slow – I can’t imagine what it is like for those with slow internet connections. It is like going back to signing on to AOL in the dial up days!

Thanks for the helpful post Derrick. We had no issues when testing browsers. It’s indeed all caching. We’ve since had our developers do a cache purge which has helped considerably as people visit the site for the first time.

On the lack of diversity, we all agree. We’ve been limited to photos we took at our Acoustic Life Festival events (they’re high enough resolution that our designers can edit and create these great designs).

We don’t want to use stock photography. It just goes against our TAC Family vibe.

So if you have ideas about how we might go about getting high resolution photos with happy guitar players (holding guitars, playing, smiling etc) please message me 🙂

We’ve got other design elements in mind so we’re still very much in need of member guitar playing photos (and if you look at forum descriptions, you see we’ve got a plan for always getting fresh member photos). The future of TAC is very member focused. Far more than we’ve ever been.

Thank you Derrick. I thought it was a TAC glitch because I couldnt open the daily challenge! Just changed search engine (Duck Duck Go) and now I am back in business…time to catch up on what I missed last week. Kudos to you for the info…thanks again!

Clearing the “history”works. Safari is now working great and I am not experiencing any issues.

Videos not loading on iPad – worked fine yesterday. Cleared cache, no change. Installed Firefox, no change.

@Peter d, while I have Safari on my Mac, I don’t use it. However, seeing the post from you and others today, I loaded the site in Safari, and it came up fine. if you are still having issues, I suggest to reach out directly to Admin. The ? in the circle puts you on the support page, and in the lower right there is a Chat, and I suggest to write to them there.
