  • fret hand struggles

I feel like I’ve been playing way too long to have this struggle, but anyone have any tips for those if us with for lack of a better term “fat fingers” I often feel like the fretboard is way too narrow and I struggle with muted strings. I concentrate greatly on proper hand position. wrist down, elbow in. 😖

Yes, I had the same issue when I changed guitars to a wider fretboard recently. I had to start doing some additional stretching to limber my wrist so that I could get a sharper angle and a better curve to my finger tips. I have to work daily on getting all of my fingers working on the very tip while fretting, especially my pinky. Hope that helps.

Hi Allen ( @FlhxsGeek ), Welcome to TAC. Hope you have a great guitar🎸journey here. I think @MoochasPoochas has touched on something when he mentions a wider fretboard. What is the width of your guitar’s neck at the nut? I’m thinking that you should have a guitar that has at least a 1 3/4″ width at the nut to accommodate fat fingers😱

In the “Skills” section, you’ll find a “Stretching” course that might help. It has stretches for the hands and fingers, along with other parts of the body that can be affected by playing guitar. Also, make sure you check out the “30 Days to Play” course. I recommend that course to anyone new to TAC, regardless of their level of ability. At a minimum, it’ll help you get the lay of the land, so to speak👍 Good luck Allen on your journey and remember to keep it fun🤩
