    I took a look at the notes for a G# diminished chord, which are G#, B, and D. Then I looked at the E 7 replacement, and without the root E not on the low E string, the notes are B, D, and G#. Ah ha! Not sure how this will impact my understanding of chord theory, but I do find it interesting.

    Yup. That’s why it’s a substitution. Almost all same notes. Just different order.
