Hotel California
Posted by DavidScoggins on July 20, 2021 at 5:31 amA couple of weeks ago I watched Omar play Hotel California at a Friday Night VOM and thought, hey, I should learn that. So I did and played it the following day on the Saturday Night VOM, and it went surprisingly well. This recording is in fact about a week after my VOM performance, but is more or less the same in terms of quality and technique.
I think this is a great song for playing around with dynamics, even with one guitar, and works well with switching between finger-picking and strumming. Anyway, have a listen and let me know what you think.

You did a nice job on it @DavidScoggins This one of the first songs I learned when I started playing.

Great rendition @DavidScoggins 👏👏👏 I saw you perform this on the particular SNL VOM you mentioned (you may remember that I played it also and forgot the words somewhere in the middle of the next to last verse) – I really liked your version then, and I like it just as much now👍👍 Great arrangement – mixing strumming with finger style – excellent🤩

Thanks @Bill_Brown. Yes, I remember and enjoyed your performance as well. Am I right in thinking it was the first time you played at a VOM?
-
Yes, first time at the SNL VOM @DavidScoggins , but I’ve also played once at the Sunday VwA back in early March(?)🤔 of this year

Your version of “Hotel California” is amazing. Nice work! The song makes me think of when my older sister brought the Hotel California album home in the spring of 1977 (the album was officially released 12/6/1976). We listened to it together, and often in its entirety. It is still one of my favorite albums even now.
If you are interested here is Don Felder talking about the song “Hotel California”. I found it interesting.

That was really great playing! It was flashback to the 70’s. It was nice the way you switched from picking to strumming. Awesome job!

Nice Job this is a great song to practice different techniques !

Thank you all @Christopher_H , @shaktiness and @johnny67 for your kind and encouraging comments. Strangely enough, I’m having difficulties with remembering the chord progression for this song and keep having to refer to my notes. I guess it just needs some more time to get embedded in my long-term memory.

Really well done David! I quite enjoyed this and I’m inspired to try this one out !

Nice job on this cover @DavidScoggins !👏🏼
I really like your flow between strumming and finger picking. Nice and seamless!

Thanks @Michelle-PSL. I haven’t been able to get the hang of hybrid picking so finger picking and strumming with my fingers will have to do instead. 🙂
