1.) How many days per week do you play?

When I first started TAC in April I had not played in 50 years, except last year during the pandemic, I borrowed a guitar from my 90 year old dad. I played some chords and that was all. So I started TAC this year and didn’t have a playbook as what to do. I did the 30 day primer, watched a few challenges, ask questions in the Forum and watched Acoustic Tuesday. So I might play or might not. After about a month of hearing Tony say over and over how consistency was critical, I started enjoying TAC, learning some things, and started playing every day, for at least 15 minutes. Now, I’m at 30-60 minutes a night and it’s just automatic about 7PM. Yes, I see improvement.

<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>2.) What time of day do you play?

I’m on the golf course by 6:30 AM, then lunch, then off to do volunteer work at the Botanic Gardens, home to do my chores here, watch the news, eat dinner, and then it’s TAC time, about 7PM every day. On the weekends I may play later in the afternoon. It’s like relaxation time prior to another day.

    3.) Where do you play?

We have a finished basement so my wife has designated that my area. I have a big bedroom that is empty except for my military memorabilia, and family photos, but has now become my guitar room. Now 2 guitars, an amp, numerous accessories, music stand and my office chair with the arms removed, provides a nice quiet place to play without interfering with anything/anybody.

4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
Even when I started TAC, I didn’t have a routine. I was overwhelmed with the amount of info and material. I’d play whenever I could, and only until I got frustrated. If I could find something more fun to do, playing ended soon. Then I started numerous lessons (i.e. Barre Chords), then fretboard navigation, then flatpicking. Lessons were interesting. The more I played the better it worked.

    – A regular routine has helped me actually devote time to, and use it beneficially to become a better player.

    – A regular routine has given me better skills that I’m retaining due to the frequency of playing. It’s like a record playing every night, and pretty soon you remember more and more of it.

A regular routine keeps my mind wanting more. What seemed like punishment to push myself to play, has now become an obsession to hear and learn more each day. A big eye opener was fretboard wizard. I knew barre chords as a kid, I have big hands, but I knew nothing about the fretboard.

5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?

My one must have is a nice warm, quiet environment where I can concentrate and learn quickly, and my guitar room provides that.
