Jammin’ with @Marty69 8/21/22
Posted by Bill_Brown on August 21, 2022 at 2:05 pm@Marty69 posted a Tom Petty song “You Saw Me Commin” at my request so I could jam with him. It took longer than I expected to put something together. Since Marty did this as an instrumental, I found it hard (at first) to follow along with him because I was used to playing along using the words as my start and stop points. So I did several takes over a couple of days to get what you’re about see – enjoy!

Nice touch! Good job playing over his track. Well done young man!

Thanks @Philb , appreciate the kind words and support🤩🎸 Without hearing the words to the song, it was hard for me to stay in sync with Marty’s work. I tried singing the words over his track at first, but that didn’t work out to well (LOL)😱

im jealous Bill. I cant seem to jam over any track and I admit I have not taken that step yet. Good for you!

Don’t worry @Mrfredsporty , it will come to you with time. I started doing this because I wanted to improve my improvisation skills. Usually on TAC Wednesdays we learn a scale and a technique to use over the backing track. It’s been few and far between that I’ve been able to put out something worthy of recording for the Wednesday improvs. Then I started trying to play over peoples posts because 1) I could use my FW knowledge to figure the key and from there 2) I could just play notes in that key’s scale using different octaves to see if I could come up with something that sounded nice to me – basically more practice without restrictions. I still have a long way to go to achieve the ability to produce beautiful melodies like some of the other TAC members, but I know it will come with time.

Yep, I’m at the same point, Mrfred! But thanks to Bill and some other TAC folks, I’m actually starting to believe I’ll get there someday. Nice job, BillBrown! You and Marty are inspiring me to have faith in the journey!

I really like the creativity that you and @Marty69 are demonstrating here @Bill_Brown through the collaboration. It takes the idea of what we might do together in TAC to a whole new level. In my previous post I didn’t express my appreciation very well for what the two of you did here. Very cool and a great contribution to the TAC family! Thank you! 😎🎶🎸👍👏

Thank you again @Kitman for the kind thoughts. As I said before, I started doing this to try and improve my improv skills. I do know for a fact that @Marty69 would be happy for anyone here to play over his instrumentals and post their results – emphasis on posting the results. In the previous iteration of TAC, posting a performance video was greatly encouraged by TAC and the entire Community. That seems to have slowed way down since the introduction of the current TAC rendition – more philosophy driven than performance driven. A lot of the people you see performing in the VOM’s used to post videos and be more active here in the Forums. For whatever reason (I know the reason but will not say it here), now those people just perform at the VOM’s, and you don’t hear diddley from them here anymore. Sorry to rant, but I think that’s why Marty is trying to “spark” people into posting performance type videos IMHO.

Bill is right, I do VOM with the folks in the UK on SCONES. I see a lot of the TAC old timers there but don’t much see or hear from them on TAC. I’ll say it, a lot of folks don’t like the new rules or web page format. We are restricted to only posting our own performance videos. You can’t even post a cartoon or joke.
“I’ll tip my hat to the new constitution, take a bow for the new revolution, smile and grin at the change all around, pick up my guitar and play, just like yesterday, and I’ll get on my knees and pray… We don’t get fooled again.”
I am a life member so I am kind of stuck where I am at. 😊🧙♂️😎

Thanks for the history of the changes at TAC @Marty69 . I had seen people refer to “changes” in posts before however didn’t have the gen. I am a TACer and am VOMer as well so I do see the differences you are describing and at this point enjoy both venues. That all said, thanks again to you and Bill for demonstrating that we can collaborate here at TAC with one another’s material. Very cool. 😎

Nice job @Bill_Brown enjoyed it. Next time what might help is to hear the original song in a ear bud then play along. The backing track is in the same key and temple. Thanks for sharing Bill & you’re welcome. Let me know if their is another one you want to do. 😊😊😊😎

Yea @Marty69 , not my best work but I’m glad you enjoyed it. I lost tempo and became out of sync with you at a certain point in the recording. I’ll have to look into that ear bud thing. As far as the next one, it’s up to you👍🎸
