Leaving TAC
Posted by Cadgirl on February 4, 2023 at 10:59 amYes, the time has come. My membership is coming to an end Feb 21st. I will be leaving TAC, at least for a while. I do want to say that I have developed a fantastic guitar routine because of this site. I play guitar every day. I really don’t think I would be this far without TAC. I NEVER would have known a thing about Music Theory without the Fretboard Wizard (I must say it was pretty awesome). But, most of all, I’ll miss the forum. All of you have made so many posts that have inspired me. I want to thank everyone for the interesting stories, the comments on new equipment, new guitars and the many songs that were played. Again, Thanks

Hello @Cadgirl ;
I can’t believe you’ve already been here 2 years. Wow, how time flies when we’re having fun. I’m so glad you came over to JMG, that will soften the blow and keep you active with fellow guitar geeks.
But the teaching aspect of TAC is truly special. It blows my mind how many people don’t see it. Well, I guess there’s nothing to see, is there? When you “look”, your mind is involved and you want to see song tutorials and skills courses. But in the first lesson I ever took with my face to face instructor, I learned things that I couldn’t do a year later, so what’s the point?
The “point” is to learn like a kid does, and that’s what TAC does for us. So no one can “see” it, they have to “experience” it. And even then, they have to do it long enough for the magic to happen. But we’re still not done, because then we have to realize what has happened.
But here’s the point for you Denise, you have experienced the magic. You now know how to enjoy your guitar journey and continually improve. So, you’ll be ok. There are many resources you can use to help you explore new areas of the guitar.
I’ll see you on JMG.

Thanks @N-lightMike , I copied every one of my daily challenges and dated them so I could do them in order, so I have 2 years worth of challenges to go back to. I think once I did the 5 day challenge in the Skill Section it was a light bulb moment of what we were supposed to be doing with the challenges. Then the FBW really cemented it in my head. I still have to work with it, and redoing things but I think I at least understand it now. Your right, TAC isn’t just another tutorial site. It’s a site to strengthen your skills as a guitar player. Gives you the knowledge, how you can change a song around into another key, or add your own riffs and run ons. Make the song your own. See you at JMG. 🙂

Well I’ll certainly miss you….. and I certainly must offer “thanks”…….. a hundred times over.
You’ve always been a solid source of information, advice, and perspective as I read thru the Forum threads, whether you are answering questions or commenting on some of MY “out there in the weeds” subjects- (some of which I’m sure made you wonder just what the hell kind of orbit I was in😜)….. or….. others’ more sane questions and points of view🤔.
I, like many others, always liked seeing that you had posted something here in the Forum— always encouraging.
Well…….. CONTINUE offering wisdom wherever you land.
Maybe I’ll peek into JMG myself— (but it is unfamiliar ground)—, and simply follow/read along- (“standing in the back of the room” if you will).
Carry on, miss!😢 It has been a pleasure for sure……..

Thanks for all the kind words. Yeah, I really went back and forth on if I should quit or not. Always look forward to your posts. I’ll miss the way you have of expressing your thoughts and your questions. You know…. There are a lot of people that are TAC members on JMGs. Just stop in to say hi. I just went back on it to look around so I really don’t have much experience on the site yet to give an opinion. I talked to Victoria and she told me that I’m welcome to come back and everything on my site would be the same. So that was good to hear. Who knows what the future holds.
-
C_G–
Per your “who knows what he future holds….” sentence.
Well, I- (and I’m not alone)– KNOW your future is bright!
Thank you for mentioning JMGs to me– and I may just do it, but I worry I’m a– LOT– too wordy on the Forum HERE- (so there’s that), and don’t want to be that way in that place too. I have a bad trait of overexplaining everything.
So anyway– go get ’em!!!….. keep learning, keep playing, and keep havin’ FUN at it!
And maybe you’ll see me poking my head in “there” once in a while….
Mark

Hey Mark @the-old-coach , you said:

I’m sure glad I don’t have that problem… I mean, caring what anyone thinks simply because I talk too much and have unusual opinions. My problem, if you call it a problem, is that some people like me and some people don’t, and I really don’t care. 😎
You’d be welcome on JMG, I’m pretty sure. I know I can’t speak for everyone, but that’s what I think.
MG 😀

@the-old-coach, no, your not too wordy. You add fun to each of your posts. I’ve looked forward to them. Yep, and N-lightMike is correct. You just are having fun and explaining something in a fun manner.

Geek on, wherever your journey takes you! I too have enjoyed reading your insights and experiences with TAC. Glad to see you found your way to JMG as well – I greatly enjoy checking in there regularly, and plan to eventually get brave enough to join in with the VOMs.
My own renewal comes up in May and I just might decide to explore other pathways more seriously. TAC has been a huge blessing for me in firmly establishing the zest to become a better and more serious guitar student/player/geek.
All the best!

@GerryB56 I was thinking about a post of yours just yesterday. At the time was thinking about “STOPPING” the crazy guitar buying I got myself into. After all I have 6 guitars and that’s quite enough. Then…… you and @John_Hall post pictures of your resonators! Now, what do you think, I’m looking at resonators. Ha ha ha.
-
@John_Hall That is a lot of guitars. I mostly use my Taylor 812ce, I think i could actually downsize to the one if i had to. 🙂
-
I’m very glad about getting my resonator. I’ve played it quite often, mostly using it to explore open tunings (open D mainly, so far), and one goal is to use it to learn some blues slide guitar. I’m also at 6 guitars currently, though I’m probably going to sell my GS Mini as the neck is just too narrow for me to finger pick on. It is such a lovely instrument and has such a great sound for so small a body, though – it won’t be easy to let it go. Planning to try a classical guitar, hoping the wider neck will prove more amenable to my stubby fingers😆
-
I think you should hold off on selling the Taylor GS Mini Gerry @GerryB56 , and I’ll tell you why. I finger pick and almost all of my guitars have the 1 5/8ths inch nut. It has nothing to do with your fingers, either. It’s just practice. You’re a long way from having enough skill and experience to say you can’t finger pick on the neck width. It’s way more versatile than the wide, classical neck. I have a nylon string guitar with a narrower neck. They are hard to find, but they are better for those of us who play a wider range of music genres. Chord structures are hard on the wider neck and you are pretty much forced to hold the guitar in the classical position. There’s no strap, or standing up or holding the guitar in a more horizontal position. But, it’s your guitar journey. I’ve seen people who play all sorts of stuff on a classical. Though that’s more rare than seeing people play classical stuff on an electric with a very thin neck.
Anyway, it’s your call. I just know that I have let go of guitars that I didn’t need to let go.

Wishing you the best! Thank you for the gracious support and encouragement in the forums. Your comments have always been so fun to read.
-
@KayMesser , Thank you, I know I am going to be sad when my last day comes. TAC really has become my guitar family.
-

I wish you all of the best Cadgirl. Being a Pioneer Member of TAC in 2015 I left twice but honestly I missed the Daily Challenge part of the program and came back.
It truly has something to do with your guitar routine,I find myself playing more as a member.
Not all of the material presented here resonates with me,as I am a Flatpicker type of Classic Rock player at heart, with a bit of Bluegrass admiration also.
But I am happy to be here. NGD coming as well. Epiphone Les Paul Slash Appetite finish😀
Cheers!!!

@James H. It never hurts to look around at other sites. I have a list of sites that I like, and write why I like them. That way it is an easy look up in the morning just what I want to do. TAC has a lot of good ideas and the site is great. But, this year, I went through and quit a lot of ‘pay’ sites that I use. Just happened TAC hit the chopping block with the others. I can always come back. This might just be a rest. Hey…. I just started a little bit more of flatpicking and bluegrass. My playing bluegrass sounds more like a 45 record on a 33 speed thou (Gosh, doesn’t that date me). Thanks for your comment. :

“like a 45 record on a 33 speed”. 🤣🙄😔
(my thoughts were— 🤣 “that’s funny!”…….. 🙄”wait a minute”…….. (then)…….. 😔”that’s ME”…….)

I probably should have said a 78 on 33 speed. But, I didn’t want to date myself too much. 🙂
-
See, now that is a concrete plan, Denise @Cadgirl , and I know you have the discipline to line up material to practice for yourself. That’s one of the big things about TAC for people like me who don’t have that discipline. It’s like working out at a club or at home. You can do it fine at home, but will you? I belong to a club. I belong to TAC. So I both workout and play guitar.
We’ll talk on JMG. You’ll be ok. If you ever go back to TAC, just save up your money and do it once. Buy the lifetime.
MG 😀
-
I don’t have any problems with self-discipline. I worked from home for a living for years. Now, I think I have my sights straight on what I want to accomplish in the next 10 years (you always need a goal to be successful at anything). The hand holding is done, I can do this. I wish I lived a little closer to my grandkids that I could help them get into guitar. Teaching always makes the knowledge stick. What I will miss is the comments for help, or comments on new guitar equipment. I’m still thinking about getting a looper that the @the-old-coach was talking about the other day.
-
Yeah, @Cadgirl , I didn’t know about your working from home for years, but I was able to tell you will handle your own guitar journey just fine.
As far as the helpful comments, they are just as abundant on JMG, so no worries.
As far as a looper, they are a great tool to develop timing and playing along with “others”. The other musicians you would be playing with is your own self. They seem easy but they aren’t. You can learn the same timing with a metronome, but it’s not as much fun. And, the real reason for a looper is you can play live in front of others and literally build a song in tracks.
I have one but still haven’t ventured into using it. I’m not as corageous and adventursome as I might pretend. 😅

I am not one who participates in the forums very much, I pop in and out to ask a question or just to read comments, but I have seen your name often. I think I can understand how you felt as you made the decision on whether to stay or leave. January 30th marked my 5th year anniversary with TAC, and to be honest if I hadn’t jumped on the bandwagon with gusto at the very beginning and quickly purchased a lifetime membership, I would be weighing staying or going as each membership period drew near. Fortunately, I don’t have to do that.
There are days when TAC doesn’t ring out for me, having gone through the daily lessons for so long. But, then a brand new weekly challenge pops up, I feel like a kid in a candy store waiting to see what will happen. It’s nice to have TAC here to fall back on.
Good luck on your guitar journey. I joined JMG’s awhile back, I think you will find a place there. It is a friendly and I think they work hard at trying to make everyone feel welcome.
Enjoy your guitars, play on and have fun!

-
probably not, but, I do plan on playing better. Really going to be pushing myself before my arthritic fingers close up on me.
-
-
Sad to see you go as you are such a regular, and positive part of the community. After my first year with TAC I was struggling with the same question, to keep it going or not. I was able to purchase the lifetime membership, and get a reimbursement for the first year; which meant I paid basically two more years for life.
Keep playing; and hopefully we will see you again. Thank you for all you gave to this group!
-
@Philb, smart boy there. Yeah, I thought about contacting support about the lifetime. I had joined about 3 months before the big remodel of site. During the change there was a few months that everything ran crappy and there were so many changes, I got hesitant about getting the lifetime. Now that everything is back in working order I’m sorry I didn’t take the plunge. Don’t get me wrong, the changes made the site more professional, The site is easier to manipulate. Sure, I miss some of the old stuff but, it’s not a garage website anymore. It has really taken a step up. Answering these comments, i know i’m going to be really sad when I leave.

I have a place to play at home and my office, so I keep guitars at both, acoustic and electric so I don’t have to transport them all the time.

-
Thanks, I kept my log-on name the same, i was hoping members would recognize the name. I’ll have to add a picture on my profile.
-
Yeah, that would be great to personalize your profile on JMG. That way we’d know your really going to stay with us. 😉
And you could still get ahold of support and see what they’d be willing to work out with you, if anything, regarding a lifetime membership. You don’t know if you don’t ask.

As a fellow Michigander, I share your sentiments. My membership is also ending and I don’t plan to renew. Wishing you well. – “instruments that stay in tune and people likewise”.
-
@David_Leo , I had a lot of fun with TAC but, I think it’s just time to spread my wings and go. I do plan on really stepping up my game when it comes to playing the guitar.

I understand completely Cadgirl! You are a really valued member of the forum and I will miss you. I will probably also leave in April. I have learned so much but I want to really concentrate on fingerpicking and learning independent thumb which I think I can find in other areas. I too may return. It is very tough to beat the camaraderie in this site. That is for sure
-
Thank you @Mrfredsporty, I appreciate your kind words. You have searched out the old Song Vault. It’s got a flat picking side. I became interested in the bluegrass flatpicking tunes myself. If you don’t remember the site it’s https://app.searchie.io/hub/254V7grV3m/ Make sure to bookmark it somewhere. That way if you leave in April you’ll still be able to get to it.
