  • Oh what to do, what to do.

Posted by AttyTJ on December 14, 2021 at 1:03 pm

It is almost time for me to goal set for 2022. Some of you know that I met last years’ of at least one Woody Guthrie song each month, but now, what to do?

I hear the positive difference between January and December, and will need to push harder next year to improve even more (after all, I allegedly have extra time on my hands.)

So, as a way of learning about other music I may not know, I would love to hear some thoughts from my TAC friends on artists that might need (ur, allow me to) covers in 2022, who are not named John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot or Mark Knopfler (their stuff gets played by me all the time, since I just love the music and lyrics.)

Any thoughts accepted, if you are willing to offer. (Oh, and given my contrarian outlook and ways, Elvis Costello is not eliminated, so any argument pushing him into the bin is gratefully accepted.)

Thanks and I hope the New Year brings you as much fun with the Guitar as last year has for me.

Thanks @David_Leo . I was unaware of Andersen, and must look deeper. Mary Chapin Carpenter songs in my voice are, well, interesting, so we will see. Great suggestions.

Since you seem to have a penchant for folk music, How about looking across the pond at Steel Eyespan or Fairport Convention. Some good music and interesting history

Yeah @Alfred , both excellent thoughts. I have done a Steel Eyespan cover of an Irish Folk song gone modern, once, and love Fairport Convention on so many group and individual levels. Thank you, great ideas.

@alfred, from that list, what one or two songs do you suggest. Those are very good ideas, and I have done a couple of each on the last 2 years.

Your post made me think of this specific song… I couldn’t remember who did it so I looked it up
“And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” by Eric Bogle… if you are taking specific requests. I think you would like this song, and I think you would do a great job on it.

From anyone else @Alfred , I might not think about it, but you have been leading and following music I am leading and following, so I am going to work that one up. I will be laid low for a while, so time to get going. Thanks.

Have you considered a Joe Satriani sonic highways unplugged?

No, that is, not until you mentioned it, so, yes. Thanks, Jason. Do you have a link to view? I love the range Satriani has, but, way beyond my ken in a lot of ways.

Hey @AttyTJ , have you considered some Jonny Cash – I’m talking about ones from his later years that aren’t well known but great acoustic music. Also, how about Tom Petty – also a lot of great acoustic stuff. Wishing you and yours some very happy holidays 🤩

How about Jackson Browne. He has an amazingly diverse body of work.

Also he is a true guitar geek. Often plays shows surrounded by 20 acoustics.

Billy Bragg – folky with witty & intelligent lyrics that pack a punch both from personal politics side and broader actual politics. Have a listen on the tube, look for Billy Bragg – Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards (1988) and I dare you not to want to play along 🙂

@graceX, I love Billy Bragg and Wilco, or by himself. what one or two songs do you suggest.

As you know, Billy does loads of foot stamping songs but also some lovely picked chord progressions…so you have a wealth of material to pick from. As a beginner I worked through Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards – easy chords. I suspect The Saturday Boy is relatively easy but haven’t yet launched at that one 🙂 10 mysterious photos that can’t be explained is a great sing along tune. So, so many!

@AttyTJ , Congrats on your accomplishment! Woo Hoo! 👏🏼

I recommend you check Amazon or used book sites for two companion books: The Complete Guitar Player Songbook Omnibus Edition One and Two by Russ Shipton. They are both compilations of smaller songbooks with songs that our generation would know (OMG, Did I just write that??? 😲). These are my go-to books when looking for a new familiar song.

Good luck with your next year of songs.🎵

Not specific named artist, but I’ve considered such a 2022 goal to include current, living, actively recording or writing artists. I’ve considered Jason Mraz, Phillip Phillips, Jack Johnson. These aren’t my traditional fare, but I’ve realized most of my covers are not alive anymore.

I like the idea. I have been thinking, Artists from places I want to go. I.e. New Zealand, etc. Time in running out on me, I got to get my head straight and decide.

That is actually a really great idea! For NZ you could look at doing a Crowded House song. Can’t wait to see what you post in the Play for Us section 🙂

A great little tune from Australia is Paul Kelly’s Sleep Australia Sleep which uses some bass note picks and is really great to play along with

Wow, so many great thoughts. Now, time to move.

As for Billy Bragg, since discovering him and Wilco, I have played quite a bit, some publicly, but it is a great thought, and something there will be included.

Some of you may have seen that I have decided to pick 24 or more songs suggested by my friends and Family, and the Guitar Geeks in my life. So Far: Mr. Bojangles (probably the Nitty Gritty version) and Stuck in the Middle with You. As next Chistmas arrives I have some other ideas, but I will see what people want.

Thanks for your great ideas. I know, I am being redundant, but that am who I are, sometimes.

    Happy New Year.
