Rain Song for October – 90 Day Progress Challenge
Posted by Moonhare on October 26, 2021 at 5:47 amAs part of the last 90 Day Progress Party I committed to posting a flat-picked song per month. So for October, and considering I live in England, I thought Rain Song might be appropriate. Plus it’s by one of my all time favourite bands and guitarists (Jimmy Page) so what could go wrong?
I am actually still learning this but I’m happy with progress so far and am starting to be able to add a bit more expression to my playing. Still can’t play the rhythm and lead lines simultaneously so I added the lead over the top at the end to save you listening to that wild cacophony of bum notes and fret buzz! So put up your brolly and listen to the English rain falling…
PS/ If you want to learn this song (it’s not in standard tuning) then check out Angela Petrilli on YouTube.

Wonderful performance @Moonhare 👏🤩👏 Great sound and great playing👍👍 I’m thrilled to be a witness to your progress and I bet Angela would be proud too

Thanks @Bill_Brown . Learnt on my old Fender dreadnought as I didn’t want to keep retuning for daily challenge but decided to record it on the Yamaha.

Nice one @Moonhare. Great song choice and not an easy one to play. I have been watching Angela Petrilli’s lessons lately and you’ve done her proud. It’s funny but I was at an open mic this weekend and a guy played this and I was thinking if it weren’t for the alternate tuning I’d probably know this one already (I play lots of acoustic Zep). Thanks for bringing the rock to TAC!

Thanks. I know it is possible to play it in standard tuning but it’s ridiculously difficult. If alternative tuning is good enough for Jimmy, then it’s good enough for me!
-
I know. Alternate tunings are really cool and if it was done that way originally then it’s really hard to play in standard most times. I have to overcome this alt-phobia. 😜

That was an excellent performance Moonhare! I really enjoyed listening to this song. Congratulations on the progress of your 90 day goal! 👏

Thanks @stevieblues . I think the 90 day goals are good when they are achievable but stretch you as well – quite literally with this one. There’s a really nasty stretch at one point near the start that took a while to get!

Wonderful. That was really beautiful. Great playing, you are an inspiration. I know I will watch this many times and send it on to friends. Your fret-work is lovely to watch.

Hey there @solitaire thank you so much for that comment. I found this one quite a challenge but worthwhile persisting over the course of a week. Honestly was wondering if I’d bitten off more than I could chew to start off!

Hey thanks for that. It was a real stretch for me but that’s when you actually make progress isn’t it?

Awesome sauce! I just finished watching her video of this today and am practicing it. Great job!

I hope you have as much fun as I did. Took several sessions for me to piece it all together but she explains it all so beautifully.

Great choice of tune and well played @Moonhare. I always loved the chords in this composition. One of my favourite mellower Zeppelin tracks. A challenge you rose to achieve! 🙂
-
Thanks @charlie_d . It was great fun to learn it but also led me down a rabbit hole of noodling around in alternate tuning.

Beautifully done. This is a difficult song, so congratulations. It was pleasure to hear.

Sorry I didn’t reply. Missed the post at the time but thank you. I really enjoyed learning this one. If only I had enough guitars to always have this tuning set up on one!

Moonhare, I totally enjoyed your performance. Loved the tempo and feel. Jimmy would be proud! You inspire and I am going to try and learn this one!
-
Yes it really is worth trying out. Obviously you have to retune but I decided to learn this with my old guitar so I could leave my new one in standard for the daily challenges then just retuned my Yamaha as a one off to do the video.

Beautiful song and well played Moonhare! Carl Brown has a video on how to play that song too and I’ve been trying it. The alt tuning certainly helps. I could never figure out those chords before. Well done!

Trying to work out these songs if you don’t know the tuning is a complete nightmare. Thank goodness for YouTube!

Hey thanks. It is the first Led Zepellin song I’ve tried and I was really pleased to get it preety much right.

Thanks – first time out on a Led Zeppelin cover version.

Hey thanks – this one’s a bit old now so I’m just posting a new flat-picked tune I did today.
