  • Set Guitar Goal – Finally!

Posted by Greg_F_Lee on June 7, 2021 at 9:10 pm

My guitar goal, now that I’ve just passed my first TACiversary, is to feel like I’m making progress toward being a guitar player. Right now, I feel like I’m only getting marginally better. I did all the Daily Challenges but didn’t feel like I was learning how to play guitar, just how to play a lick or scale. Something was missing. And I think it was fundamental mechanics and music theory.

Therefore, for the indefinite future, not to exceed one year, I plan to complete some of the more foundational courses (I’ve already done Fingerstyle Jumpstart). Specifically,

    • Your Next Six Chords
    • Flatpicking Jumpstart
    • Foundations of Fretboard Navigation
    • Fretboard Wizard
    • Strumming Jumpstart

After that, I’ll look to more advanced courses.

I also plan to learn a new song every three months.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated. Courses you recommend? Order of taking them? Does focusing on fundamentals seem like the right approach?

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me. TAC courses are foundational and teach us practice goals of a minimum of 10 minutes per day and your skills will improve. You’ll be able to take your skills outside of TAC and apply them to songs, etc. There are so many great YouTube lessons and sites, such as Justinguitar.com where you can learn songs. Also, if you want to play a song, take the Flatpicking Jumpstart. Fretboard Wizard is a great tool and teaches fundamental theory and helps really open up the fretboard to allow you to go even further. You’re on the right path. Take your yearly goals and break them up into smaller chunks over a 90 day period that will help you reach your goals. This will help you keep your focus on the end result without muddying the waters.

Hi @Greg_F_Lee , I agree with @Loraine , your plan looks good but be careful not to overload yourself😱 Based on what you’ve said in your 1st paragraph, I would suggest doing “Foundations of Fretboard Navigation”(FFN). Then follow that up with “Fretboard Wizard”(FW). FFN is an “open registration” course, meaning it’s available to all TAC members for no additional charge – just like all the other “skill” courses. But FW is an additional cost course. If you didn’t already buy it when you joined, then you’ll have to contact TAC Support about getting the course. I want to say it’s around $150 to purchase, but I’m not completely sure – I don’t think it’s any more than that. That being said, I strongly recommend taking that course. You can find some of the information in FW for free elsewhere on the net, but it won’t be the same learning experience by any means. I’m talking from my own experience on this. With Tony’s teaching technique and the way the course is laid out, FW will give you a whole new outlook on your guitar playing and music knowledge that you never thought possible. Things will come together for you more quickly and easily. In short, it’s money well spent! Good luck on your journey Greg🎸

Keep up the good work and by all means….Keep having fun!! Most likely others around you will hear your improvements before you do. We are so hard on ourselves. Just keep strumming & showing up! It truly is a journey. You’ve taken the first step in holding yourself accountable. Well done! Fret Wiz is the shizzle btw. Too many aha moments to count!

Thank you, @Loraine, @Bill_Brown , @John , and @BethL ! That’s exactly the type of feedback I was hoping for: encouragement and advice. These forums never seem to disappoint.

Based on your suggestions, I will move FFN and FW (I did pay for it) up to #2 and #3. I also will break down these annual goals into 90 day chunks. Maybe 90 days each for FFN, FW, Flatpicking Jumpstart, and Strumming Jumpstart. Of course the goals could be adjusted at Tony’s quarterly check-ins.

    Thanks again!
