Size of the guitar
Posted by Edith on July 3, 2021 at 3:12 amSo, I’ve got short stubby fingers and only 161cm tall. I’m finding the normal size adult guitar slightly too big. I have some shoulder issues to begin with on my strumming arm, so by the end of a lesson, it is hurting a bit.
I’m thinking of getting a smaller guitar. What do you think?

I love my smaller guitars! I think you should find a guitar that fits and is comfortable for you, that will make playing a better experience every time you pick it up.

Smaller guitars arent just for kids. I have a single O parlor size because its more comfortable when sitting on the couch.
A dreadnaught you really need a stool and to be sitting straight up

That’s the great thing about guitars. There are so many shapes and sizes that there is something for everyone. You could try a parlor size or travel guitar, or even go to a children’s size guitar. Whatever is comfortable for you.

If you have a local shop nearby, go and try out their guitars. If they have a good variety and a knowledgeable sales team, you should be able to find the appropriate guitar. I know a lot of people love the Taylor gs mini. The Taylor academy series is also a favorite of new players and experienced players as well.

As the TAC members above have said, there are good quality guitars in smaller sizes. I have a Taylor GS Mini I play on sometimes. It is important that you find a guitar that is comfortable to play for you and will not aggravate your shoulder. Good luck in finding your guitar!

Thank you for all of your feedback everyone! You confirmed that I should be looking for a guitar that fits me well. I have heard a lot of great things about the Taylor gs mini, so will check that out. Feel free to offer other recommendations!

Edith… I would recommend the Taylor GS Mini. It is about 3/4 size but it sounds fantastic! Granted I won it here on TAC a few months ago so I am biased! HAHAHAHA…
But I am teaching my son guitar now and he uses it and it is much easier than a full size guitar for him. You will probably have the same experience.
Good luck!

If you’d like to try a GS Mini knockoff at a fraction of the price, look at the Harley Benton GS-Travel Mahogany. I had to have mine set up (the “Colorado Hump”) and the very experienced luthier was impressed with it. Easy and fun to play, and cheap enough that you won’t feel bad if you accidentally drop it into the campfire. 🙂
