sound quality at different speeds
Posted by TroyR on June 18, 2021 at 10:59 amDoes anyone else have issues with the sound quality of lessons on any other speed than 1x?
1x sounds fine but if i adjust to slower or higher speeds the sound quality is very poor it echos a great deal?
I have tried all levels of quality adjustment and no difference
am I missing something?
never had this issue with old 3 speed settings
Thanks

Yes, @TroyR , I have noticed this anomaly. I haven’t let it bother me too much. I do use the speed function sometimes, but mostly I use a metronome on my phone.

I do… I also wonder how to know which speed is the actual true speed to play in sometimes..it’s not always about speed.. or am I wrong? preferred the older look when it comes to the speed.

It is because speeding up the video changes the pitch. I miss the old way with three videos….

I miss that as well OwenGL. The tone change and the echo throw me off to a point I don’t bother going any other speed. I will just try with my metronome instead. I guess in a way, it did push me to use that a bit more…but I don’t think that was the intent.

Hey @Ddtediejm ,
Whether is was the intent or not, causing us all to use a metronome more is a great thing. And, since the separate speed videos jumped by 20 bpm and Tony tells us to go up by 5 bpm or less when trying to increase speed, It wouldn’t surprise me if that was exactly his intent.
Either way, I don’t see any advantage to the different speed videos. But I do think there is a clear advantage to the current arrangement.

Yep. Bothered me a lot at first but then I got used to it. I wasn’t around here for the 3 speeds video but I really wish it was there. Watching something played at higher speeds is not the same as speeding up the video: I’m sure Tony plays a bit differently at a higher speed, subtle changes in finger movements and transitions, I’d like to see that.
It doesn’t make sense to me why they decided to take that away: the content was already there, created. Maybe for new content (if there ever will be such a thing) they can just make 1 video, but why not post the once already made? For the beginner lessons, the speed up button doesn’t do the trick, where the speed difference between slow and fast is ×5. Now the “normal speed” is the slowest video, and the fastest you can play it is x2, so not even the “medium speed” of what it is supposed to be.
Anyone interested in starting a petition to bring the 3 speed videos back?

Hey @Alisa ,
You’re in luck, because we can play the video faster than we used to. The most common speeds were 80, 100, and 120 bpm. So the fast speed was only 1.5 times faster than the slow speed. The top speed in the warm up speed challenges was 160, 180, and 200 bpm. So that was only an increase of 1.25 times the slow speed. And we always had .75 and .50 times the videos, which would make sense using the slow speed.
As far as why, it might have been load speeds. The old TAC was always a slow site compared to the norm on the internet. This site is doing very well now for the type of site it is.
Anyway, even with the 3 different speed videos, it really didn’t help much. First, we all need to learn to use a metronome. Second, to increase speed, we want to increase by 5 bpm at the most. So the speed jumps were too great unless you could already play at that speed.
As far as Tony’s technique changing in the different speed videos, that just wasn’t the case. Occasionally, he would use different fingers to pick the strings as his speed increased. But that was about the extent of any differences.
I hope this helps.

Occasionally there were other differences. Sometimes I would notice differences in his thumb placement on the fretting hand or some other subtle technique variations. In the extreme, for some exercises, I noticed that he would, for example, play a lick as written in the tabs for only one of the three speeds. I admit that was rare, but is happened a few times. And of course there were times when none of play-alongs matched the tabs. I thought that was very good for illustrating the “musician as a human being” aspect of guitar playing. He’s not a robot. For the most part, though, things lined up very well at the different speeds.

“It doesn’t make sense to me why they decided to take that away: the content was already there, created.”
So much seems to have been driven by a need to use less server space. It looks and feels like a severe cost reduction evercise. My perception is that quality of the material and quality of the experience were sacrificed in the name of economy.

Thanks everyone Glad its not just me 🙂
I would fully back bringing back the three speeds but until then I will just start rolling withy the Metronome
Thanks again!
