  • Swallowtail Jig (take 2)

Posted by Philb on April 5, 2021 at 9:13 pm

I had recorded this previously without the backing track Tony had made as I couldn’t get the timing even close. There are only two chords played through most of it, but they are played rapidly, and it was like a wall of sound to me, and it was throwing me off. This time I memorized it, and just concentrated on keeping myself steady against the backing track (which I know is low and hard to hear on the recording). I was still off slightly as you can hear at the end; but much better than before. I can see how timing is so important in playing with others. I have a long way to go, but felt there was some progress.

Thank you! A good one to learn, to stretch, and use that little finger more.

GReat job Phil! This tune is a favorite of mine especially when the tempo is wound up. Keep up the great picking!

Thanks JohnV! When I recorded it previously I was playing at a faster tempo as it seemed natural. (There is a video on Youtube of a young girl playing it on fiddle, and she slays it.) Playing with the backing track made me slow down. This was actually good for me to practice as I tend to speed up too much at times.

Well done, Phil! Timing was very good. It’s great that you played it along to the backtrack to keep time with another (virtual) player. I like this tune very much. You had me doing a little belated St-Patrick’s Day jig as I was listening!
