I enjoyed today’s VwA, and all those who found us even with my posting error on the time.

This is No. 6 in my Guthrie Dozen or more for 2021. It is one of over 3,000 songs that Guthrie wrote, but his Huntington’s Disease prevented him from recording or finishing. Billy Bragg and Wilco completed the music to this one and it was on the 1998 “Mermaid Avenue” album, 51 years after Guthrie stopped performing.

Sound issues of mine lead to using this audio track instead of the zoom video.

Tech: Guitar, 1998 Washburn D-21 S/N (Black Angel passive pickup), recorded with Studio One through a Samson G Track Pro.

Sounded great @AttyTJ – I need to become more familiar with Woody Guthrie’s songs. I don’t think I’d heard this before.

Thanks @AttyTJ I love Billy Bragg and Mermaid Avenue is a very special album. I remember seeing Billy Bragg in 1984 in Swansea Leisure Centre, first time I saw a man hold an audience in the palm of his hands with one guitar and a great passion.

I am unfortunate enough to not have started diving into Bragg and Wilco until I started looking for Guthries songs, and wow, I am a fan, now. Glad you enjoyed it, @greebosolo. Once we all open up, a bucket list item of mine is to get to see some geat performers, live, in the British Isles.

Great to have you along in TAC, and thanks for the information. That would have been really cool. It was a talent that Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger had, individually and together. (But I only ever saw Seeger live.)

@AttyTJ Great song and it’s playing over and over now in my ears. Very nice playing.

Nice job TJ. Apart from the name I only know a few things about Guthrie. Like the Bob Seger version.

Once again nice strumming! Keep them coming TJ

I am not so steeped in Woody Guthrie…

I finally quenched my curiosity and looked up his relationship to Arlo Guthrie (with whom I am more familiar) Wouldn’t you know it… Arlo’s Dad… Makes sense.

His Huntingtons Disease meant I only ever got to see and hear his music through others, including a couple of Arlo’s performances and Pete Seeger at Red Rocks, plus all the music from the Dust Bowl from Woody’s Album. He was around, though, and like some people want to get to the Blues history areas, I want to get back to Tulsa, as his Center wasn’t there, yet, when last I visited.

And the “now” performers finishing and recording his music is really fun, although my voice is much more in Woody’s Style than Billy Bragg or Bob Seeger or others, but I admit I can kind of match the Dropkick Murphys, Country Joe MacDonald and the Klezmatics, if I think about it. (or maybe that is don’t think about it).
