TACaversary #1, New TAC Year, New TAC Site
When I started TAC I knew several basic chords and could play many of my favorite 3 and 4 chord old country songs that I grew up with. I was given the opportunity early-on to play in front of others and that has helped greatly, but I still get nervous. I also had the basic music theory that Tony teaches in Fretboard Wizard. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly what it is that I have learned over the past year. Seems like it has been gradual and has just snuck up on me. I am a pretty slow learner anyway. Here are my observations:
I have certainly gained many new friends. The Friday Night Live VOMs (and now other days, nights) have been great for this. Watching others play on those VOMs has also encouraged me to step up my playing. I used to be happy just playing the chords and singing the songs, now I try to at least add some kind of instrumental break in the songs I do (although I have a long way to go to be able to do this as well as some of the great TACers out there). You all truly provide inspiration.
I always looked at soloing as something that would be nice to learn someday. With TAC that someday is now. I am still in my infancy, but I am slowly seeing how someday I could do this.
Enter a new TAC website – During the lead-up and the upgrade of the site I spent some time thinking about what Tony was saying about the focus of the old site (or lack thereof) vs. the focus of the new site. I am realizing that the new focus on the daily challenges is helping to focus my learning in a good direction (coupled with the 90-day review and goal setting).
As I am trying to catch up on a week of missed lessons due to being in Death Valley without internet access for a week, I am realizing that the slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs are coming much easier than they did last year. I remember seeing these ice skating themed daily challenges before. I didn’t document how I did (or felt) at the time, but I can guarantee you I did not do so well the first time around. I did learn early on that I shouldn’t beat myself up or be discouraged if these licks, etc. didn’t come right away (something about expectations being where fun goes to die). It is really nice hitting these lessons a second time and realizing that I am doing much better now (long way to go, but much better).
Bottom line – I’m having fun and learning things. Bring on another year! Yes Virginia, there is a Bm in my future.
