Hi all, I’m a very new guitar player. I picked up a guitar for the first time last Friday and thanks to TAC I’ve played it every day. This is super exciting for me and I want to try to build up a good habit practice.

Ive tried learning mandolin in the past but tended to play a few days and not pick it up again for 6+ months. I want to build better habits with guitar.

Next month I have two trips planned that are going to be big obstacles to consistency.

Questions – if I’m kayak camping and car traveling and can only bring a ukulele are there ways I can practice pick direction and strumming that will keep me on pace for TAC? I assume so even if the tuning will be different.

If I’m going home to visit my folks while working remotely for 10 days is it worth renting a guitar? I can’t travel with the one I’m using now (it’s not mine and it’s too nice).

    Cheers!

Taking the ukulele with you seems to be a sensible solution. Maybe instead of renting a guitar use the money to start saving up for your very own guitar?

It’s great you are so into TAC you will continue it as you travel. Have a wonderful trip!

Great point. The money for a rental definitely could go towards a guitar for myself as well. I was originally planning on buying myself a guitar if I could make it through the whole 30 days to play + 90 day challenge, but sooner might make it easier with travel.

@KayMesser – consider the Taylor GS Mini – smaller but works well for beginners. Fairly easy to travel with but an excellent starter guitar. I have one as well as a Journey travel guitar. I prefer the GS Mini. Much better. Worth the money. Try one at a guitar store but look for deals on Reverb.com

        Happy travels for you!

    Kay,

Great to hear that you are going to play the guitar. When I went on a trip last year, I took this collapsible guitar:

I rented it from a local guitar shop where I live and it cost me just over $90 for the month. I was actually only gone for 21 days but the monthly rate worked out to be cheaper and gave me a bit of leeway returning the guitar.

    Good luck!

A foldable guitar! I had no idea. Thank you for the suggestion. It’s great to know that you were able to take it on such a long trip! Much appreciated.

@KayMesser, Of course you could still practice on the Uke, but it is a bit different. I’ve never played one so I’m just guessing. 4 strings and tuned different. When I was traveling my brother gave me his granddaughter guitar which is a guitar you’d buy at a department store for maybe $30 (First Act). Had 6 strings, tuned the same as a adult guitar, shorter neck. Got a lot of practice tuning it because it would come out of tune. But, it still worked great for me. Best of all, I didn’t have to be afraid of taking it outside and damaging it like I would with a rented guitar. Have fun on vacation.

Great point about the Uke, I didn’t think about tuning differences. It’s excellent that you were able to keep up your practice with a kiddos guitar. My nephew is learning so maybe I can see if an expensive guitar can be left at my parents place for both him and myself. Thanks for the suggestion!

That would be a really good idea to have a spare guitar at your parents.
