  • Warm-up Exercises for Relatively New Player?

Posted by Ron49 on February 19, 2022 at 2:54 pm

I’m just a few months into making a real attempt at learning to play and have completed “30-days”, “next-6 chords”, “5-day guitar routine challenge”, and “stretching for guitar” here, along with the first three levels of Fender Play (blues).

One thing that I haven’t really found is a good warm-up routine for my current level of skill. Is there a session, or set of sessions here that you’d recommend as a good warmup each day in addition to some of the stretching?

Thanks for any info – my feeble attempt at searching here didn’t turn up anything.

In the Skills Courses, the 5 day Finger Stretch Challenge has some good daily exercises. Also check out the 5 Day Crosspicking course for few slightly advanced exercises. In the weekly technique Classes you’ll find a lot of great exercises as you go. Be sure to save those so that you can refer back to them.

@Ron49 Welcome to the TAC community! Have you tried the daily challenges? That would be my suggestion for being introduced to scales and warm ups. Mondays are always warm ups, and if you find a few you like, you should ‘favorite’ them (heart under video), and then incorporate them into your warmups. Also, Wednesdays are scales, and those are always great to use for warm ups to. Each week follows the same foundational skills and each day builds upon the Monday warm ups. Hope this helps.

Thanks folks – I’ll follow the suggestions from both of you! I’ll start my first week of Daily Challenge tomorrow.

Hi @Ron49. I would recommend the daily challenges. Also run through the Pentatonic scale, forward and back. You mentioned stretching exercises by all means do the 5 finger Stretch Challenge. Davefive put together a cool chart on exercises that makes it a little easier to go through. Hope all the comments are helping you out5.

Nice! Thanks to you and Davefive for the graphic. I had made notes as I went thru it, but this is a much better reminder.

        Ron–

My two-bits about these finger-stretching exercises: when you are doing all those finger-stretches—- try to keep your- (fretting-hand)- arm fairly straight- (like in many of the pics). If your arm is bent you lose a LOT of effectiveness.

But— be careful with these, especially at the start. Kind-of “ease into it”. Believe it or not, you can mess yourself up if you just start reefin’ on things.

As far as a “warmup routine”- there are some great suggestions already here in your thread! I agree with Moochas Poochas that the 5-day Finger-stretch Challenge is great- (my favorite is the “Vertical Stretch” exercise. In my own “warmup” I go thru a half-dozen or so various lessons that “get everything movin'”, and the Vertical Stretch is one I do EVERY day.
