YouTube cancled my accout any suggestions? HELP
Posted by Marty73 on June 21, 2024 at 9:42 amI have been posting via YouTube for many years on TAC. Now all my YouTube video have been blocked and I am locked out of my account! Any suggestions on what other programs I can use to post on TAC besides YouTube?

That is so weird @marty73. You should definitely contact them for an explanation and immediate reinstatement along with all your videos. I always thought storage of my videos on YouTube was safe.

@Loraine YouTube told me that I violated copy rights on the Eagle songs I posted. I didn’t know they were copy righted! I explained to them that I am just a guitar player sharing my music. I’ve switched over to VIMEO. Hope I can get my stuff back. Thank God I stored them on my desk top.

All songs are copyrighted. Don Henley is very diligent about tracking down videos that infringe on his copyright. Which is why I never post Eagles songs. Most other artists don’t care about individuals doing covers.
Was it listed as a public or private video?

Hey Marty,
sorry to hear that! I guess they thought you wanted to monetise if your video was posted as public….
There is Vimeo as you said, but after so many uploads you will have to pay to use. I know of another one called Daily Motion, but i have not fully investigated it. I hope they let you use your account again, if you tell them to delete that particular Eagles video…

I post a lot of songs as public. The AI checks for copywrite and puts a key on a recording indicating how many copywrites there are and tags the video, but I would think as long as to state it’s a cover and mention the artists name it might be okay. How can they shut your account down? Am I being naive about this? I ask, because I rely on You Tube to hold my videos and keep my analytics.

@Marty73 I made a similar mistake with a public post. My account is blocked. I have had no success in resolving the issue. I can’t even subscribe to any channels.
-
Thank you @JeffM.22 I think you are right. No answer from YouTube at all. I am looking at some of their competitors and I found VIMEO that’s like YouTube. Just not posting any Eagles songs at all. I’m just a guitar player trying to share my music and I always give credit to the crater of the music.

This really sucks! things have become so extreme now, so many restrictions for everything these days! Good luck with the other platforms, let’s hope it’ll be a while before these get hit too…

How do you know whether you can post something publicly or not?
-
You can only legally do cover songs for songs in the public domain.
There is another option that works for some artists where you have to allow advertising on your channel and YouTube will then pay the appropriate royalties to the artist.

Prince, The Eagles and Bob Dylan are some of the most aggressive about issuing takedown notices. So I will not do covers of their songs.

Out of curiosity, is there someplace I can see what songs are okay and what aren’t?

Almost guaranteed that anything you’re going to play that was produced in the last 100 years or so will be copyright protected.

This is not unique to YT but since they’re large and with deep pockets they don’t want liability for their content and so monitor fairly heavily. In certain cases, as mentioned, the artists have people that do it themselves.
Copyright is no joke and the rights you lose by posting to YT are pretty big. I’ve tried to warn people about this in the past. Your music (even original music) is no longer your own and you’re at the whim of the platform. Of course most people never even look at the agreement or research a summary of what they’re signing off because it’s not as fun as posting and watching.
-
Thanks @SoCal_Ian Still sucks! Any other sites I can post on? I am trying VIMEO. Ever used them? Any others?
-
I don’t use those platforms at all. No social media accounts. Nothing. Why? I think you just found out.
I also store all recordings locally and thus they’re mine to do with as I like. YT didn’t “screw you”. You violated their terms of service which you agreed to up front. The fact that you may not have known or received warning of same is technically irrelevant I’m sorry to say.

This was a long but very informative video on the whole cover song thing https://youtu.be/gFIOAPX5sJA?si=nsupKYMz4O3f0m36

This wasn’t too long – I found it really interesting. I’m going to have to watch it again when it’s not 2 in the morning – haha. I think it basically says that most of our covers are okay, as long as we don’t change the meaning of it or take away from it. But there were some things to watch out for and do some homework on. I’m going to be much more cautious, however.

@Loraine After reading and listening to this video I think YouTube was wrong for canceling my post. I clearly posted for each post “cover” and gave credit to the author, Plus I didn’t change a thing or words of the song. Going to contact the host of this video and see if she can help me get my stuff back from YouTube.

@Moonhare Hey Darren, since you’re in the music industry, do you have any information or words of wisdom you can add to this post regarding copyrighted material and what can and cannot be posted on different social media sites?
-
You didn’t ask ME specifically @Loraine but here’s some good advice: https://diymusician.cdbaby.com/music-rights/posting-cover-songs-on-youtube-music-licensing-law-explained/
The main thing is that unless it’s public domain or you get the author’s permission then you’re really at the mercy of the holder of the legal rights and/or YouTube.

Hi there – some artists are more letigious than others (I’ve heard about the Eagles before) but I’ve posted plenty of covers and all that happens is they get copyright tagged and any monetisation would then go to the artists who own the copyright. I cannot see any reason why that is a problem to an artist. I suspect that this is a bot searching YouTube and flagging eveything that comes up whether it is commercial, or in this case an innocent guitar player just posting to friends. So ridiculous but YouTube has never knowingly been transparent and fair. People get strikes against their accounts for the most ridiculous things.

Really appreciate your thoughts ! Hope you’re doing well and having some great musical adventures!

Youtube has turned itself into a flat B string!!! I am on locals and rumble and go to youtube only when desperate.
-
I look forward to hearing how you like it! I am sickened in my heart to know you have lost access to your videos through the years. For that alone YouTube has earn my sincere ire.
