  • Zager Guitar experience being sought

Posted by dth on January 6, 2022 at 5:35 am

I am in the process of purchasing my “Acoustic Guitar of Lifetime” and have on the list a Martin (probably obviously). I have a Taylor. Money is an object as I recently retired. Came across this Zager Guitar out of Lincoln Nebraska established by Denny Zager who recorded In the Year 2525 in the 60’s. I am looking for any feedback from anyone who might have purchased one of these or has some other experience with a Zager. Thank you all in advance.

Hi @dth , to hear a Zager being played, you should check out @JoeW ‘s Play For Us video. He has a parlor style (12 fret), but it should give you an idea of the sound.

Stick with the Martin or Taylor. I have a Zager I don’t care for. You might say I got a lemon. This is what happens when you don’t try first. I bought this one used but in nice condition and great case. Just didn’t sound good to me. Just my 2 cents.

From my understand his guitars are just set up for extra light strings. I would be curious if the Zager’s braced the top a little lighter. I think there are better values out there.

It seems you have received some good advice, @dth . I would start by analyzing my own parameters: “Acoustic Guitar of Lifetime”.

I’d say, by definition, that means a well known and well trusted guitar. It doesn’t have to be a Martin or Taylor, but it does have to be something with a high resell value, because that would indicate it is respected and desired.

BTW, it doesn’t have to cost over a $1000 to be a high value guitar.

    MG 😀

I agree with Mike. Guitar of a lifetime deserves to be hunted down, and tried. I find it more fulfilling and rewarding to go to a few stores, try a bunch and see what different shapes, tonewood combinations, how the necks feel etc… plus get advice from staff who could even play them to you so you can have a better idea of the voices of the guitars. Don’t rush and buy one online, but enjoy comparing and contrasting instead, then you will have a guitar you will love for life 🙂

I agree with all of the above. For this type of purchase, you should try before you buy. The being said, I bought a Zager a while back, wanted to try a short scale, solid mahogany. I was very disappointed, sound was not great and intonation was not true up the neck. However, they did honor their free return policy, so in that sense you have nothing to lose.
