Chris Martin – Devil Pop Art & Being CEO of Martin Guitar

Chris Martin is the current CEO of Martin Guitars. This interview takes some wild turns as we talk about everything from a day in the life of CEO of Martin to his succession plan to his devil pop art infatuation.

As you know, I love Martin guitars so this was an enthralling interview for me:)

What are your favorite takeaways from Chris? Leave a comment below!

  1. C. F. Martin the 6th? I bet you his daughter’s middle name starts with F?

Wow, I spent my life as a touring professional and entrepreneur. I am the son of a master mechanic and entrepreneur. Grandson of a railroad forman and entrepreneur.

Chris’ fear of not knowing what to do running a business. My dad put me in charge of development of a new Interstate tour bus company. The way he described how he got through it, so smart of a man.

I have my eye on a couple of Martins on the second hand market. Playing expensive Martins at the guitar center makes me want one or two or three badly. Hearing the Martin’s story makes me want to goto the factory, see and learn everything I can about them.

Tony, you getting to see the original homestead and factory. Man can we get you to talk to Larry and plan (with our help) a TAC Field trip? Thanks to you and Larry for capturing this moment in time with Chris.

  2. I love the philosophy of Chris Martin . That of being a college and not just The Boss. Watching this interview makes me want to work for the Martin Guitar company and makes me want to make my next guitar a martin.

  3. would really like to own a Martin one day, the interview with the watch maker was really impressing

  4. Great interview. I haven’t been a big Martin fan but I am slowly coming around as I see and hear more of them. Chris seem like he has the right idea about his employees and business unlike many other CEOs. I will be trying out some Martins in the near future.

  5. Thanks for the interview Tony. I’m a huge Martin fan myself and enjoyed the insight from Chris regarding their products production & people. I’m planning a trip east this spring and intend to visit the Martin factory in Nazareth. Really looking forward to seeing it!

  6. I was impressed by Chris’s humility in recognizing where he is most effective in his business – many CEOs would want the public to believe that they are intimately familiar with every tiny aspect of the business. I attended a “Martin Experience ” a couple of years ago and even on film, it was obvious that the people who make Martin guitars really love making Martin guitars. I, too, am a Martin guitar lover – there’s nothing else quite like them ……

  7. I liked that he promotes from within, rotates his workers through different roles and truly cares about the natural resources that are used to build his guitars. To even acknowledge that the trees need to rejuvenate and treat these valuable natural resources with respect is what all need to do!

  8. The whole business model blows my mind. To have MSRPs of 10000$+ average MSRP is I guess around 2500$. And to be in Mass Production (compared to the industry). The quality of work blows my mind. Cant wait to have enough fun money to buy one.
This guy is all business and family. Love him.
