Hi Tony!
this is a wonderful song! Not too hard to learn and so fun to play! I now have one Christmas song to play over the Holidays! 🙂
I will have to work on that major finger going down on the high e on second fret. I also tend to cheat with index! With a bit of work I should be able to nail it before the 24th (my goal). Will post as soon as it becomes presentable!
Merry Christmas!
Julie
Hey Tony,
I am glad I chose this song lesson, even though I have struggled with a fingering issue. Maybe I have been doing standard G chords for so long that muscle memory wins out over directions from my frontal cortex. My first issue is using the ring finger to fret the low E at the third fret. I can do it, but I have to over-ride lots of automatic playing to make it so. The kicker comes in measures 9 and 11 when you want the middle finger to fret the high E at fret 2. Not only is this a tough reach, but my ring finger tends to damp most of the strings. I have been practicing this and have improved some. Over the past few days I went rogue and just used my index instead of the middle finger for these passages, and it is more comfortable and considerably more musical. Have I committed John Fahey heresy here, or can I move forward without guilt?
One other minor bit comes with the inverted D chord. I love the sound, by the way. I notice that you play it with two different fingerings and need to do this when you need the index for melody notes. Maybe pointing this out in the lesson would help students to practice both fingerings from the get-go. Just a suggestion. I will post my rendition when I have this one ‘under my fingers’.
Paul,
Yes you can absolutely move forward… and don’t look back 🙂 You have not committed any John Fahey heresy, in fact I am sure he made a ton of his chords in non-traditional ways 🙂
Thanks for the tip on the D chord inversion and how I should explain why I do it right off the bat 🙂
Can’t wait to see and hear your version!!!
Cheers,
Tony
