Paul Reed Smith – On Doing Mushrooms & His Favorite Tonewood Combination

Mr. PRS was one of my first interviews (sorry for the lighting!) and it was a total blast. As you see, Paul is very down to earth and approachable. In this conversation, we talk about his first guitar and the Stella that’s sitting behind us. He tells some animated guitar and music stories, plus we play together.

I hope you have as much fun watching as I did doing this interview.

  1. Taylor’s ‘Sonic Engine’ is basically following this pattern with Andy’s touch. Paul was really pushing the envelope. I got my daughter a PRS custom 24 whale blue electric guitar this year. She LOVES it. The PRS electrics are an amazing guitar. Great interview!

  2. It was great to listen to Paul’s philosophy on playing as well as building guitars. Gives me a broader perspective.

  3. That was amazing, He is a fascinating person, and his passion for guitars and music is contagious, I’m going to watch this one several times, and share it with a few friends that are huge PRS fans.
    Thanks Tony

  4. Paul Reed Smith knows. What he said about looking to past craftsmen like Antonio de Torres Jurado and other experts, seem to be correct and adds to his credibility. The importance of the soundboard and selection of woods are very important as this interview points out and becomes more clear to me. My appreciation of your efforts at TAC grows daily. I’m so happy to be in this community. I love the song “Norwegian wood” and will play it someday. As for the mushrooms, I’ll take two dozen!

  5. Paul Reed Smith… I absolutely love this guy. It was so much fun listening to his infectious joy about guitars and his equally infectious joy over playing. It makes me wish that I lived nearby so that I could visit the factory, check out the wood vault and maybe… just maybe… have the pleasure of meeting this guy. Tony, thanks for including this interview. More! MORE!!!

  6. You guys sound great! Love his idea of having a relationship from customer to dealer to manufacturer to wood supplier.

  7. Really different sounding guitars. Fun interview to listen to. Always considered him as a maker of great electrics. Acoustics seem to be quite nice as well. They had fun playing together. I enjoyed hearing his take on the construction of guitars and using them as a “speaker cabinet” .
