This exercise was just to reinforce what we learned in FBW. The daily challenge is another nightmare all together.

I redid the challenge Puckstopper. These are my changes. I’m using the C shape everything works using the C shape EXCEPT for the note on the 2nd string which is open. For that note I would switch to an E shape.

I opened up the FRETBOARD WIZARD 3.1 – CAGED ingredients (attached) and it allows me to use the open C chord. The only Chords that allow me an open 2nd string is the E or G. I just happen to choose the E.

This works with ‘Puckstopper’ and ‘Glove Save and a Beaut’

Thanks to N-lightMike for pointing out my error on D. I am still going to go back and check out the daily challenges for this week and LISTEN to the video this time 🙂

Still not saying this is correct, but I think I am going in the right direction. It’s starting to make sense.

@T-BAR I will have problems with the videos locking up on my IPad. I have to close out, clear out the memory then re-log in and play the video again. Most of the time that helps. Give it a try and see if that helps. But, the support group is always there for you.

@ReZ If you are just starting out keep in mind that your fingers are doing the most uncomfortable positions imaginable. As for the pinkie and Ring finger, just use the very tips of your fingers you will eventually get used to it and maybe with time they will be side by side. As long as they are on the same fret you should be ok thou. Like @GerryB56 said a wider neck may help, but it’s a longer stretch too. Good luck and Welcome

@jenbicimsn-com Sounds like you have gotten some good advice already but I have to add my 2 cents. Your size plays a lot into what size / type guitar you would do good with. I’m 5’6” average sized woman with carpel tunnel in both my wrists. I wear a brace at night that helps my carpel tunnel but, if it flairs up, I’m only good for 10 minutes no matter what I do. Otherwise I’m good to play for hours as long as I’m taking a break here and there. I had a Martin D28 which is a big guitar and for me it was uncomfortable for me to play. Same issues that you mention, shoulder and back pain. Now, I prefer a smaller guitar. GS-mini is a great size. Easier for me to get my arm around. Then I have a couple of Grand Concert sizes, which are just a tad bigger. I also want to mention my Grand Concert sizes are only 12 fret models so the neck is a bit shorter. I start out sitting very upright but then start slouching over my guitar like a crab by the time I done. I thought both @GerryB56 and @Loraine gave good advice. Also go to your nearest guitar store and try out different guitars. But, what feels good in the store might not feel good 2 hours into playing. Remember to stretch out before and during your playing. Good Luck to you.

@dinman1949aol-com Great you like the slide. I bought one and it’s still in my drawer, never tried it out. It seemed to be too loose on my finger. I’ll have to pull it out again and give it a try.

@ChuckS @N-lightMike @albert_d @HowardM . Just to let you know. I set my de-humidifier up to 40% last night and this morning the gauge registers 40% in the area I would be keeping my guitars. Yeah, I’ll keep the gauge in the basement and just keep an eye on it. I’m happy with 40%. Thanks everyone for your comments.

@N-lightMike ,Thanks for getting with me on this subject. 50% humidity would be hard for me to hit in the winter. It’s pretty dry right now. Once we get some fluffy snow it will be a little better. I usually stay around 30% humidity in the winter, so maybe that isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It might drop a little more but not much. I do have a humidifier that I used last year upstairs and it kept it better. Now, in the basement…. That is a different story. I’ll see what I have tomorrow since I shut the dehumidifier off today.

@the-old-coach just take it slow. I took the 1st FBW and I was lost. I could get the musical alphabet and then getting into the Chord Matrix was getting a little harder. In fact I still get confused with it. The CAGED system is hard. Just happened after messaging back and forth with you and @Kitman it started to make a little more sense. Then when @N-lightMike got in the conversation, he pointed out a few things and I could see a little better. I still don’t know if I’m 100% correct, but I see more than i did just last week. So just give it time and one day, you see just a small light at the end of the tunnel. maybe just a spark 🙂

@That_Guy Thanks for the information. My room now is about 10’ x 8’, not so hard to regulate. I just bought a 90 gallon aquarium and it is taking up a lot of room that was for my guitars. Since I’m afraid of the guitars getting knock over now, I’m planning on moving my guitars into the basement with has Low ceiling and it’s about 35’ x 20’. It’s built like a studio room. Actually pretty awesome right now, but wide open. A kitchen area, entertainment area with furniture and wide screen TV and then a sitting area with furniture along with rugs. I did purchase some Humidipak 2-way humidification system. I’ve never used them before. I hate to start putting my guitars back in their cases. You know… Out of sight, out of mind syndrome.

@ChuckS Normally this time of year we are in just cold and dry weather. It’s been raining just about every day so the humidity is up in the basement untop of being cold. The temperature has been going up to the 50s and down into the teens at night. Once we get into December a little more it will just be cold and dry. Yes, I have a AirCare Evaportive and put a bacteria stuff in it with every fill. Which is usually every day. Pretty happy with it. Thanks for the input. Not putting it out till the rains stop for good.

What I am doing right now is trying to get a handle on the CAGED system. I just went through the FBW and trying to do the reinforcement ideas that Tony has listed. I’ll attach a copy of the title page. But, in the meantime. I am going to open up a Word document and copy your answers into it so I can go back to it later and figure it out as to how the Daily Challenge is to be done. If I want too long I’ll never find the thread. I have to go step by step with this stuff. If I don’t understand why things are working, I’ll never truly get it. In other words you’ll be hearing back from me. 🙂

@N-lightMike , oh no…. thanks for the comments and for pointing out that D wasn’t my best pick. I was thinking I had to worry about that “open high E” string. Like I said, I really think the C shape will work for me. I’ll be working on it later today and see what I get. I’ll also get my head phones and listen to the videos. I will probably get back with you on this after I listen to the videos. I know i’m getting there and it’s all starting to make sense but I’m still not completely on the track. Thanks again.

@HowardM , It would work out better for me anyway. I get up early (5:00ish) and my husband doesn’t. It would be nice to go in the basement so he doesn’t have to hear me pluck away at my guitar 🙂 . I could set up my guitars nicer downstairs. I would still keep one upstairs. But, the rest of them would go in the basement. I have never had a guitar crack, but I don’t want to start now. If your curious just start out with a humidifier gage, they cost about $30. It will give you the temp and humidity level. I picked up a nice humidifier last year, but it really only seemed to work in the room it was in. I put a fish tank in my office thinking it might help with the humidity but it didn’t. This forum has given me a lot of ideas of things to do (and buy). So good luck.

@N-lightMike I did see where I had the 2 Pad Stack incorrect. But, I’m still not in full agreement with you on using E shape on that. The same with the Puckstopper, I don’t see a problem with using the C shape throughout. You mention Puckstopper is in the Key of Em? I don’t have that?? I am working off a print out, I don’t always have sound on my computer (bummer)
